Harold Malmberg, 27, convicted slayer from Des Moines, died in a Nebraska penitentiary hospital. Warden Neil Olson said death was by self-administered poison. Malmberg believed the ghost of Russell Goodwin haunted him after the 1934 slaying.
One man died and two others injured in a three miles west of Mediapolis crash. Percy Wells, 51, cashier at Burlington railroad freight house, was killed when his car driven by his son Earl, 24, collided with Floyd Franklin’s Burlington truck. Wells’s car overturned multiple times and he was pinned under the door.
Jim Bailey, who has served as acting chief since April 1940, submitted a written resignation to the Cedar Rapids city council. He requests demotion to detective after the Linn county grand jury charged the police department with laxity during a strike disturbance at the Wilson & Co. produce plant.
Mrs Gottlieb A Barney aged 57 died at a Waterloo hospital from burns to face arms and legs after naphtha used to wash garments ignited in the basement of her home. She was cleaning garments when the fire started and part of her clothing was burned off.
Iowa City police catalog a theft of about $2400 worth of women’s fur coats from a salesman, George M. Duff of Cohen Friedlander and Martin Co of Toledo. Duff parked his locked 1936 auto downtown. thieves pried the air vent on a car door to steal the coats.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to speed approval of the $5.985 billion lease lend appropriation plus about $100 million in supplemental defense funds to aid nations fighting the axis. House leader McCormack suggested the bill could move from committee within a week or two and urged rapid consideration of price control legislation to stabilize farm and other prices.
Washington County farmers are advised on 1942 wheat marketing quotas and penalties for oversetting allotments. AAA Chairman Carl Oldfield explains quotas aim to stabilize prices and protect loan collateral, with spring referendum to set the county share. Farmers seeding within their allotment avoid penalties. oversetters face penalties when marketing excess next fall.
Mrs John Ryan 64 dies suddenly from a stroke at her home 616 West Second Street Washington. Rosary at eight tonight in the Ryan home. Mrs Martha Faris traveled to Wellman Saturday afternoon to spend a month with her sister Mrs Howard Gardner.

A dynamite explosion at a quarry three miles north of Ames feeding the Ankeny munition plant killed Roy Cook of LaPorte City and seriously injured four others: Joe West North English Ural Banner Elliston Gerald Hewitt Grand River and Gene Peek Humboldt Nebraska. Coroner Mills to hold an inquest once the injured can be questioned.
County agents say fall wheat may be sown after September 26 following a statewide entomologist survey. Farmers should destroy volunteer wheat to prevent Hessian fly hatching and plow deeply to bury maggots. The Hessian fly threat is the worst since 1922 23, with potential losses if outbreaks occur.
The British and American missions to Moscow have arrived by air on Soviet soil, according to a Tass news agency broadcast heard by the United Press listening post in London.
Dale Gallagher has leased the service station on West Washington street from Mid Continent Petroleum corp ration. He assumes charge this morning and will continue the same service for patrons as Al Brown. Roger Lance remains as employee. Brown held the DX station lease for eight years. Gallagher has 13 years in Washington service station business.
During the past week several new cars were registered in Washington bringing the 1941 total to 5,843 cars and 971 trucks. Names include Lloyd Foster Keota J A Anderson Nita Corbin L A Borkoski Chester Green and more from Keota Brighton and local dealers.
Bob Westphal appeared before Justice of Peace Ed Bovee and pleaded guilty to larceny for taking a diamond ring from Mrs. Donald F. Smith in the North Prairie Flower area. He has been in the county jail since Saturday night. Delbert and Lyle Fuller of Brighton faced intoxication charges before Justice of Peace R. W. Fillmore and were jailed last evening.
In Paris the new state tribunal condemned four defendants to death and 31 others to prison. Nine women were among those sentenced as the tribunal handed down its first major ruling.
Washington faces a severe housing shortage as hundreds of pipeline workers and families arrive. Skilled workers earn good wages and want to settle in Washington, but the city lacks furnished rooms and apartments. Landlords are asked to list available sleeping rooms or apartments with the Evening Journal.
An organization meeting for the 4-H girls clubs is set for Wednesday September 24 at the Farm Bureau office and YMCA. J Harrison Donald and Esther Everett will lead a all day session to plan the 1942 program focusing on nutrition and defense training. About 25 people including club officers leaders and adults will attend.
Bloomfield Iowa reports the death of Jane Giles a Pulaski resident aged 97. She was noted as one of the oldest twins in Iowa and possibly the nation. Survivors include her sister Rachel Rader. Brother Anthony died last year at 101.
A collision at the Elmer Horning corner seven miles north of town on Highway No. 1 involved Clifford Reeves of Wellman and Ora M. Keiser of Kalona. Reeves drove west while the Keisers traveled south. the Keiser car turned over causing heavy damage. Passengers Alta Keiser and John Wesley Keiser were treated at Washington county hospital for minor injuries and later discharged. Keiser remained for slight injuries and shock. A separate mishap near South Fourth Avenue and East Madison Street left J. B. Randle with minor injuries after a fall when a Morning Sun Rendering truck driven by George Norman rounded the corner.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull said at a Washington press conference that he favors substantial modification of the neutrality act. He declined to predict if the administration will move on the issue soon.
Berlin report states 295 persons have been executed in German occupied countries since August 1, including several women, amid ongoing wartime reprisals.
Charles Baker, 44, of West Point, died at Sacred Heart hospital from injuries after walking in his sleep and falling 14 feet from his porch last week. He suffered a broken neck and pelvic fracture.
United Press reports sea war dominates Ukraine updates as Berlin touts new Atlantic shipping successes around Iceland. Axis sources claim German submarines sunk 13 British ships totaling 82,600 tons while 15 Russian warships were damaged or sunk including the October Revolution and Kirov in the Black Sea.
Judge Frank Bechley arranged two weeks at district court this morning. At two this afternoon jurors were chosen for the state of Iowa versus Dr. F G Livesay for practicing medicine without a license. Howard E Bell paid 300 dollars and costs for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. 100 dollars and costs were paid today with 200 dollars suspended for a year. Roy Knorr case set for Thursday. Merle Gardner and Donald P Smith set for next week. Four defendants arraigned this morning in criminal cases including three for operating cars while intoxicated and one for uttering a forged instrument.
The Employment office will close Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Albert Lay in charge will administer Lockheed Aircraft tests to interested boys at one o clock in the G A R room of the Court House.
The fire department answered a call to Mrs. Grace G. Brinning at 714 North Avenue B yesterday afternoon shortly after two o'clock. The kerosene stove on the back porch started the small blaze which caused little damage, with Harvey Meek on duty at the time.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Dewey were conducted yesterday at Sherman’s funeral home by Rev. R. C. Keagy. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery. The Pythian Sisters attended as a group. Casket-bearers were Dan Hershberger Sherm Wolfe Chris Dittmer L. R. Baker Milo Steele and Manford Wilcox.
