Vietnam War Toll Mounts As Marines Press Fronts

U S and South Vietnamese forces faced heavy fighting around Con Thien Dong Ha Gio Linh and nearby DMZ fortifications as B52 raids artillery and naval gunfire attempted to silence North Vietnamese guns. Six Marines died and 47 were wounded on Wednesday with 10 killed and 179 wounded since Tuesday.

Seek new courthouse clock for Washington County

The Washington County Historical Society voted to raise about 4000 dollars to replace the Court House Clock with a new electric clockwork system while retaining the old bell to strike hours. Total cost expected near 5000 dollars includes building and installing the clock. New officers include President Lawrence Miksch and Vice Presidents Frank Kleese and Paul Shearer.

Railroads oppose Iowa liquid fertilizer pipeline plan

Six railroads won a federal restraining order blocking an Iowa Commerce Commission hearing on Mid-America Pipeline Co. proposed 275 mile interstate system delivering anhydrous ammonia from Texas into 15 northwest Iowa counties. Judge Stephenson scheduled a Sept. 29 hearing on a preliminary injunction.

Washington County Hospital progress includes a public participation program for memory gifts from individuals service clubs and businesses to furnish a room or department in donors name. Construction aimed for completion by May 1968 with permanent plaques on rooms or departments. A furniture suite is on display at the Iowa Southern Utilities Company Square for viewing and information is available at the hospital office.
