Miss Maud Hamilton 89 resident of the United Presbyterian Home died today September 21 1965 in Sherman Eden Funeral Home. Funeral Thursday 10 am with burial at Clearfield Cemetery Rev Vernon Elgin in charge. She was born December 12 1875 in Lennox and taught music after studying at Tarkio College Sherwood School of Music Chicago. Survived by two nieces and one nephew.

Tennessee State Fair fire injures 18 and causes 12 million
A Tennessee State Fair exhibit building burst into flames Monday night, injuring 18 and causing about 12 million in damage. The blaze destroyed the women's exhibit and nearby grandstand as ~200 firefighters fought the blaze until around midnight. Police and fire officials evacuated crowds and searched ruins for missing persons amid reports of looting and traffic jams.

Washington Chamber plans drive for Christmas decorations
Local firms and other members of the Washington Chamber of Commerce receive a letter from the Christmas decoration committee announcing a campaign to raise funds for new holiday decorations in the business district. The plan calls for pledges of 25 dollars a year for three years from at least 100 firms, with 5 to 15 dollars from individuals or organizations. Forty six firms have already pledged, aiming to place orders for delivery in time for the 1965 season. Many current decorations are worn out and unusable next year.

UPI reports the An Khe fighting left at least 226 Viet Cong dead after paratroopers found 71 additional bodies. US airstrikes hit a Viet Cong regional HQ in Quang Tin Province, with seven American jets and one helicopter downed on a day of heavy losses. An earlier clash by the 101st Airborne near An Khe produced fierce hand to hand fighting and a large opium cache was found nearby.

Auto swept off highway in heavy rain near Keota
Washington County Highway Commission employee Bill Van Sickle faced a dangerous dawn incident when flood waters swept his car off the Washington Keota county line road east of Keota. The vehicle plunged into a ditch and toward a flooded creek before the bumper snagged a fence, allowing him to crawl to safety.

Sigourney hit by wind storm and tornado damage
An apparent tornado struck Sigourney Iowa causing a damaged hospital and two houses with minor injuries to the Redlinger family. Windows were blown from a Sigourney home and the Keokuk County hospital suffered glass damage. Debris also broke store plate glass in Albia and tore off part of the Zaputal Lumber Co roof.

Heavy rains flood Sunset Park fish swept downstream
Torrential rains overflowed the old railroad reservoir Monday evening, flooding the western Sunset Park area and washing hundreds of fish into the streets. By Tuesday morning city workers Pete Groff and Raymond Bower assessed the damage and helped guide the cleanup.
