Soil Conservation Projects in Iowa Total $12 Million
Iowa farmers on 55 375 farms completed federal private soil conservation programs costing at least 12 million dollars last year. Washington county had 637 farms participate in 1954 with total payments of 75 052 96 and an average 114 68 per farm. Meyer said half the cost was paid by owners and operators with the rest by the federal government. He predicted 1955 would be an outstanding year as federal funds rose by 2 million dollars. Eight Die In Suspected Coney Island Fire
Eight persons were killed and at least 12 injured when a fast moving fire swept a row of aging Coney Island residences. The blaze, possibly arson, started shortly after dark trapping residents in upper floors of brick and frame buildings near the beach and amusement park. Fire crews battled through smoke as winds from the storm surge fanned the flames, with more than 50 units responding. Police opened an arson investigation as several dwellings were destroyed and sparks spread across blocks.
