McMillan, a farmer near here, reported finding a snow white puffball mushroom that filled a half bushel basket. It weighed seven pounds and measured 3 feet 10 inches in circumference.
K Yoshinaga, a Hawaii native now employed by a Newton hatchery, attended the Iowa Poultry association convention. He can sex 1000 chicks per hour and earns one cent per chick. Because of a short hatch season he works four months yearly, with photography as his hobby. He wins occasional prizes with his pictures.
A baled straw silo is studied on the Paul Brandt farm six miles east of Waverly. Thirteen bales per round form a 14 foot inside diameter. bound with one strand of No 9 wire. The silo reaches 14 rounds or 20 feet in height.
St. Louis man Frank Bergelis, 26, a former convict, was arrested for investigation after detectives said he had "everything but a battleship in his pockets" and could face charges of carrying concealed weapons.
In the American Legion parade in Los Angeles a 9-year-old baton twirler from Des Moines, Jackie Fromm, drew the most applause. Jury selection began at 11 30 a m in district court for Mrs A W Britton claimant versus Wesley Boehme administrator of Emma Smith estate over 15000 damages for injuries from an automobile crash on September 9 1937 near Marengo Iowa County The case follows a collision between a Britton passenger car and a truck that killed Mrs Smith and her daughter Mrs Perrin. Attorneys for both sides are named.
Representative John J. O Connor, longtime House rules chair, loses the Democratic nomination in New York City area district 16 amid Roosevelt purge cries, with James H Fay favored by Roosevelt winning the Dem nomination and O Connor taking the Republican nod against Allen W Dulles. Fraud claims prompt a recount demand and unofficial results show Fay 8352 to 7799 for O Connor in the Dem race, while O Connor edges Dulles 2953 to 1169 for the Republican nomination.
At the Leon Beatty post meeting Ameri can Legion outlined tentative plans for next year’s race program modeled on this year’s Labor Day event with antique cars and other races. Sponsorship by the Legion is likely and races may occur on Labor Day and two or three additional days as decisions evolve.
Rev William M Nichol Jr of the United Presbyterian church announced the church furnace, unusable last Sunday, will be repaired by Thursday evening so the building can be adequately heated for the Thursday night preparatory service. Services are set for Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon with sermons by Dr F W Eastwood and Rev I Fredmund.
A petition filed in Washington alleges a woman tripped over a display rack in an aisle of the Washington store on July 7 1938 causing injuries to her neck back right knee left hip and right shoulder. Plaintiffs are represented by Dick Leggett of Fairfield and Baldrige Bailey of Washington.

The Farmers' Mutual fire truck responded this afternoon to a blaze at the Belle Martin farm near Wellman. Details are sparse but reports indicate the fire was in a farm building rather than a residence.
Washington public schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, September 29 and 30, as teachers attend the district educational meeting in Ottumwa. All local teachers will participate, while schools remain in session on the dates of the state teachers meeting. The district gathering is preferred, so no one will attend the state meeting this year.
Mr and Mrs Laurence Cahill of Long Beach California and Mrs Libby White of Webster visited today at the George Amlong home. They yesterday called on Mrs D W McClure Mrs Orville Dayton and Mrs Elizabeth Sehully and drove in the Straw College community where their old home was located. Cahill and White are daughters of the late Dave Bitting.
Floods moved southward across Iowa while temperatures rose toward normal. Des Moines river crest reached 14.7 feet last night, flooding thousands of acres of corn but fell today. No rainfall reported and skies cleared across the state. Local highs reached 71 and lows near 36, with forecasts calling for warmer weather tomorrow.
Mr and Mrs Cyrus Galley of Moline Illinois are parents of twins a son and a daughter born September 14 in Moline hospital. Mrs Galley is a daughter of Mr and Mrs H G Miller of Washington.
