Five Humboldt county rural schools stayed closed this fall due to insufficient students. Many young residents without children are tenants on Humboldt county farms.
Estherville fire started when a bull knocked over a lantern on the Paul Rouge farm two miles east of town. The blaze destroyed the barn and chicken house with total losses around 2500 dollars.
Mrs. Hattie Shaw of Sioux Cay Omaha Neb was recovering from a bullet wound when a child found a concealed revolver in James Dingees car and pulled the trigger, causing the discharge.
Harlan-Arman Kohl, a farmer from Ten nant, died at Harlan hospital from injuries after falling from a silo filler and being run over by the machine on the county road between Corley and Tennant.

The duo used a blue 1929 Chevrolet with Missouri plates 663-424, selling counterfeit stamps and one St Louis bear stamp as security. Descriptions and a car number were broadcast to state officers as authorities pursue charges.
State Senator George A. Wilson, Republican candidate for governor, argued indirect taxation harms the poor in Central Park speech. He cited Roosevelt’s 1935 admission and challenged Democratic claims that New Deal costs fall on income tax payers. He warned of rising state government costs from more inspectors and commissions and joked that many cars will be cheap after a Democratic defeat. Calhoun and Mace spoke briefly, with the meeting chaired by Glenn Mace.
Rev Atack of Perry Iowa has been appointed to the Washington Methodist church as pastor, replacing Dr B F Schwartz who moves to Indianola. The event, announced at Des Moines, comes as a surprise to Washington members. Schwartz and his family will relocate to Indianola. Atack begins duties next Sunday. Starting at Riversdale at 10 15 AM the caravan stops Kalona Wellman Wrest Chester and Washington before reaching the county seat at 2 30 PM. Brief ten minute addresses follow at each stop including Brighton Coppock Wayland Crawfordsville and Ainsworth.
Washington county groups attending the Landon meeting in Des Moines are asked to meet three blocks east of the capital building near the east entrance. Report at 3:30 PM headed west. Harry Richman and Dick Merrill landed at Floyd Bennett Field after a round trip across the Atlantic. Des Moines reports show Washington county ahead among similar counties for income tax payments in the first half of the year. Washington county had 717 taxpayers paying a total of 15,472 in six months, vs 761 and 13,330 for last year. Southeast Iowa counties follow with listed totals for the period. The Iowa State Board notes 81 counties have already exceeded their 35 contributions as second half payments near due.

Mrs Elizabeth Shaum, 70, a longtime resident of Columbus City, died at her home near the city at 3 am after several months illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2:30 pm at the Columbus City Methodist Church.
The church, under the leadership of Rev. W. A. Bloomquiet, pastor, will conduct services and burial is scheduled at Columbus City Cemetery.
