After eight and a half hours the Wapello County jury finds Tony Thompson of St Louis guilty of first degree murder in the 1933 slaying of Oakville farmer Martin Waltz and recommends the death sentence. Paul Hake faces an indictment for the same murder.
Wealthy Clinton retiree, former biscuit company official Louis C. Sten, was held up by two masked men who slugged him in his garage on Wednesday night. He was struck with a blunt instrument, bound with tape, and robbed of over $100 in cash, a valuable watch, and a diamond stud valued above $500. He is hospitalized.
The state railway board approved Brady Transfer and Storage Co. of Ft. Dodge to operate as freight motor carrier between Ft. Dodge and points including Storm Lake Cherokee LeMars Sioux City Spencer Spirit Lake Estherville Kimmelsburg and other areas. The board heard nearly 1000 pages of testimony and chair Fred P. Woodrut called the case one of the most important before the board, with potential to set a regional motor freight line precedent.
In Sioux City area district court Walke Haney and Corwin Monroe sue Peter Blenderman a longtime farm worker alleging he stole the hearts of their wives seeking damages of 60000 dollars.
A new day nursery named Jennie Coulter Day Nursery is incorporated for fifty years in Burlington. The record filed yesterday with the county recorder states the purpose to care for and educate indigent children and assist working parents by maintaining proper facilities.
J. H. Devalt a 67 year old Cedar Rapids salesman pleaded guilty in Fairfield district court to driving while intoxicated and was fined 300 dollars plus costs which he paid he had been bound over to the grand jury three weeks earlier.
The closing sessions of the Lews State Firemen's association decided Oelwein will host the 1935 convention. William A. West of Boone was named president to succeed C. A. Stephenson of Red Oak.
Kr G Dunn a prominent Mason City attorney active in state Democratic politics was appointed United States district attorney for the northern district of Iowa yesterday succeeding Harry M Reed of Waterloo. The change places Dunn in the federal post as Reed departs after long service.
Ottumwa resident Scott Tatman suffered critical injuries when a five gallon can of borosene exploded while he rekindled a fire in a heating stove at his home. He was hospitalized in serious condition.
Charles Bear, once seriously ill at his home, is reported to be slowly improving after a week of sickness. His condition had concerned neighbors and family members who hoped for a steady recovery.
Harry Sowden, night clerk at the Annex hotel on North Marion Avenue, was robbed at about two this morning. The gunman demanded the cash register funds plus sixty cents, then fled with less than ten dollars. Police and investigators searched freight yards and trains but did not find the robber.
A Gladwin church service was held Wednesday night with a good crowd in attendance. Bert Campbell led the musical portion of the program.
Carl Anderson Walter Brown and Everett Stewart traveled to Tipton for a regional conference on government corn loans. Stewart Dean Feldman Joe Knotek and Hel Huston attended a similar meeting at Ottumwa yesterday.
Capt. Jay Brown asks Troop F men to report to the Armory at 7 30 PM for pay checks covering June July and August totaling 1060 92 dollars.
Former Iowa governor W L Harding denounces the New Deal in Central Park urging voters to elect men who will resist blind support and craft a genuine recovery program. He cites unemployment, laments government policy, and appeals to patriotism to defend American institutions.
Senator James E. Pope of Idaho praises the New Deal citing improved business conditions and higher farmer income despite rising living costs. He lauds President Roosevelt and Congressman Ed EichER and argues liberal democracy lagged economically before the New Deal.

Models from J C Penney and other shops displayed autumn women and men’s fashions while the Municipal Band played. Glenn Mace announced the event and special thanks were given for use of an International truck loaned by Shanklin of the McCormick Deering store.
Washingtons fall opening drew a crowd reported near 10 000 with free hot dogs and a busy shopping day for local stores. George McDaniel chaired the general committee while Glenn Mace handled on site announcements. The American Legion drum corps charmed the crowd with a West Point uniformed display.
Rev W F Ogleton will be reassigned to the Washington Muscatine charge expanded to include Iowa City and will live where he finds residence. He plans university work. Ogleton and family have been in Minneapolis and Chicago conferences and will return for the first Sunday in October.
President Roosevelt urged strikers to return to work and asked manufacturers to rehire without discrimination. He spoke in support of mediation efforts presented to him for approval. The strikers council met to decide on halting the strike while the cotton textile institute prepared a worker poll.
Officials report a staggering toll from the Osaka prefecture disaster. By midnight the death list stood at 1,067 with 3,057 injured and 150 missing. The strike left 71 dead, many schoolchildren buried in collapsed buildings, while damage neared 250 million yen and 280 more people listed as missing.
Joseph Norris former resident of Nira and Riverside died at the county home in Wellman. He would have been 84 on January 1 next year. Survived by children Richard and Shirley of Iowa City and Lee of Aineworth with several grandchildren. Funeral plans are pending with L. A. Jones funeral home and burial at Champion Hill cemetery north of Wellman.
In Justice Court three men appeared before Justice of the Peace J RB Rover on highway traffic violations. Edwin Deuker Wellman was fined 19 dollars and costs for improper driving. Robert Green Gladwin paid 1 dollar and costs for passing a car on a hill. CC Clements Marengo was assessed 1 dollar and costs for running a stop sign.
WILL ROGERS quips about Edinburgh Scots as liberal hosts. He jokes on needing an interpreter, renting a castle and drivers to guide grouse, and claims locals, Beatchmen, and both Americans and English foot the bill for shoots.
Miss Hilda Durst graduated Wednesday from Burlington hospital and is employed there. Her parents Mr and Mrs A C Durst and her siblings Hildoa and Mrs Omar Sleichter attended the commencement exercises.
New York dispatch reports police and federal officers narrowed the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case to Bruno Hauptmann. Hauptmann, 35, a German carpenter in the United States illegally, denied receiving ransom money and awaiting Thursday hearing after being held without bail. The ransom funds, $13,750, were found on his person. Extradition to New Jersey for kidnapping and murder appears likely as Hauptmann’s wife is released.
Helen Alcorn and Dorothy Thompson of Washington were pledged to Alpha Xi Delta at the University of Iowa. The announcement listed 147 pledges, up 20 from last year, at the close of rush week.
Washington saw a half inch more rain by noon amid a second substantial night of rain this week. Des Moines reports near freezing temperatures with 25 degrees at Inwood and 1.42 inches of rain at Davenport, while northern areas clear and frosts intensify, with a forecast of a return to normal temperatures by Saturday.
