Yorkshire immigrants shaped early Iowa towns and mines
Research by John Thorton Dixon reveals Yorkshire born settlers moving to Clinton and Dubuque counties in the 1830s to 1850s, drawn by mining then farming. Lead miners from Swaledale migrated to North America, financing Iowa farms after shipping lead down the Mississippi, while Hull Emigration Society members helped found Welton in Clinton County and later moved to Davenport.
