Mrs. T. J. O'Brien reported to Davenport police that four fur coats valued at 1950 dollars were missing from her home after weeks away. The theft is covered by insurance.
President Roosevelt ends defense inspection tour in Philadelphia with a speech warning business against relying on government favors. He calls New Deal reforms a safeguard of democracy, warns against dictatorial control, and cites laws regulating finance, labor, agriculture and industry. He notes the threat of economic democracy yielding despotism and links Nazism as a warning. Henry Wallace prepares a 17 day 7000 mile tour following Willkie’s route, with major speeches planned in key cities, including Shenandoah Iowa on Sept 25.
Estherville Junior College reports a new attendance peak with 115 students, seven above the former high. Of those, ten are enrolled in a civilian pilot training course cited by Supt. N. E. Demoney as a key factor.
In Sioux City a 16 year old, Leo Marclf, died Thursday from injuries after diving into three feet of water at Crystal Lake. He had a broken neck and partial paralysis of limbs, and spent nearly two months in hospital before being sent home to die.
William Keough of the Brotherhood reports carpet laying contractors in Cedar Rapids agreed to union scale of 80 cents an hour for a 44 hour week. The move ends a brief strike by the A F L affiliate.
Sioux City reports Cloud H. Smith founder of American Popcorn Co. left an estate valued at 137,989 with 118,857 in cash and the remainder in real estate, per district court appraisers.
Cedar Rapids police joined a two hour search for five year old John Homsey who wandered from recess. Patrol cars and a motorcycle covered the area near his home and officers prepared to search a cornfield when his mother found him asleep under a tree two blocks from home.
Victor Steiner, a Rock Island Arsenal employee, was shot in the arm when a machine gun was accidentally discharged. He had stopped to change a part while proof firing. An another workman accidentally caused the discharge and the bullet tore into his forearm near the thumb. Steiner was brought to Mercy hospital by arsenal ambulances.
Marilyn Leet five and a half years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Leet was injured late yesterday afternoon when struck by a car at the intersection of South Fourth avenue and East Van Buren Street north of the county hospital. Ezra Chrietner driver of the car told Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey that the child ran from behind a tree directly in front of the car and he did not see her in time to avoid the collision. She sustained a fractured left leg above the ankle and extensive bruising. She was taken to the nearby hospital and no serious outcomes are expected.
Reports say Germany and Italy push for base use in Europe and Asia while Japan’s ultimatum to French Indochina pressures U S defense. Britain and the United States reportedly discuss joint use of bases including Singapore to counter Japan as the Battle of Britain continues and a German air fleet is driven back near London.
Judge P. J. Siegers returns to Washington after a Newton visit where probate matters and divorces were handled. Jury terms start Monday with two criminal trials on the docket. McDole receives a thirty day sentence for resisting an officer.
Brown Sunday School Head Co V Brown of Washington was elected president of the county council of Christian education at the annual county Sunday school convention held yesterday in the Haskins Presbyterian church. Six vice presidents were chosen from Ringporth Brighton West Chester Washington Kalona and Washington. Other officers include Mrs Vernon Witting secretary treasurer Mrs Leo Hoover children's division superintendent Raymond Rich director of young people's work C J Wolfe adult work Mrs J A Hawthorne temperance work Mrs Ethel Kerr exhibits and Mrs R J Dawson administration. Morning devotionals were led by Rev N J Chapman and Ralph Nicholson led afternoon devotions. The Brighton Presbyterian Sunday school won the attendance award. Des Moines general secretary oO G Herbrecht spoke in the morning on The Constant Lure and in the afternoon presented The Larger Task.
Parade organizers for the Festicorn announced plans for a Thursday morning parade featuring Washington entries and rural groups. Committee chair Roger Sherman with Frank Parrish and Robert Patterson seek corn and farm life displays with cash prizes, inviting schools 4 H clubs rural women groups and business floats using corn products. Horse show entries bands and comic acts are planned, with pageant participants urged to join and suggestions welcome.
Applications for the October CCC enrollment are being received at the Washington county welfare office in the court house. Stephen R. Jones notes youths aged 17 to 23 who are out of school and unemployed may join. The program offers employment, trade training, education, and social development with meals clothing and spending money. Families with moderate income become eligible and may deposit their monthly allotment. Those from less fortunate backgrounds gain opportunity to support their parents and community.
Chairman Carl W Klein of the Festicorn commission announces six more Iowa county maps assembled for a large corn map to be shown at Festicorn. The class will have ten members with one eligible to wait until second semester if needed.
Chairman L A Jones announces nearly 300 in prizes for draft and saddle horse shows at Troop D Armory. Bayrd Scott of Mitchellville will judge. Entries expected from eastern Iowa towns. prizes awarded across numerous classes including suckling mules and ponies under saddle with ribbons and cash prizes.
Chairman Ray Box announces booster caravan to eleven towns next Wednesday evening. The plan includes at least forty cars with families, two bands Washington Municipal and Concert, and split north and south routes with stops at Riverside Kalona Wellman Keota West Chester Ainsworth Crawfordsville Wayland Brighton.

The Penney store window features sixteen trophies won by Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass in aviation contests. Sordens Music Shop announces a complete piano department in the building west of the shop. An archway connects the two buildings for patrons. Grand opening planned for Saturday with a display of Kimball and Wurlitzer pianos. John Yousling will play requests on opening day.
Dr. M J Cruise a first lieutenant in the reserve officers dental corps will report September 30 at Camp Meade. He received notification from Minneapolis headquarters and passed medical exam in Iowa City with Dr L L Love. His office will close until further notice as he prepares for military duty.
Douglas Eastwood will travel to Iowa City Saturday to enroll in the College of Medicine at the University. He will begin medical studies and join other students accepted for the term.
The music store has been enlarged with beautiful inlaid linoleum installed. The office packing and stock rooms were expanded by the new addition, improving the overall premises.
