Saigon and Haiphong See Second Day of Bombing

U S Navy pilots bomb Haiphong for the second straight day as the city remains a target after removal from the prohibited list. In the DMZ three B52 raids hit three North Vietnamese divisions while Con Thien endures monsoon floods. Marines suffer 10 dead and 45 wounded. three NVA killed in ground actions. In Saigon a bombing at the Nationalist Chinese embassy killed two and wounded 26 as reports of a Red Guard movement surface. Lt Gen Momyer urges continued raids to slow infiltration, noting MIG aircraft shifts to China and base relocations in Phu Yen and Gia Lam. The embassy blast nearly misses Ambassador Hu Lien.

Power firms plan to join holding company

Iowa Power & Light Co. of Des Moines and Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric Co. of Davenport announced plans to form a holding company with headquarters in Des Moines. The move requires U S Securities and Exchange Commission approval, likely in about six months. The new firm would own the common stock of both companies, with the exchange ratio set by financial advisers.

Tragedy in Iowa as sewer cave-in kills four workers

Four construction workers were buried by a cave-in at a 16 foot sewer trench in Russell Iowa. Two others were pulled to safety and hospitalized. Victims include Lowell Gillis 54 and son Marvin 23 of Cole. Clyde McKinley 19 Russell and Donald Van Den Borsch 36 Ames identified by Iowa Highway Patrol.

Advertising Tax Rules Loom Over Iowa Revenue Plan

Schwengel Proposes Revised Education Tax Credit Plan

Girl Injured in Shooting Accident in Keota

Theresa Greiner nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Bernard Greiner of Route 3 Keota is in good condition after a hunting accident in a hog lot. A .22 rifle bullet ricocheted and split, striking her abdomen but missing vital organs. She received surgery at Washington County Hospital around 5 45 Monday evening and is listed in good condition.

Ford UAW bargaining stalls on grievance procedure in Detroit

Detroit area talks between Ford Motor Co and the United Auto Workers halted after a two hour session produced no progress on the grievance procedure. UAW negotiator Ken Bannon said both sides seek changes to keep grievances from becoming written while warning that Ford remains hard-nosed. Remaining talks focus on promotions and worker training programs to move blue collar staff toward white collar, with little sign of settlement amid ongoing strike pressure.
