Des Moines announces a new program to provide library services to Iowa rural communities. Funded by WPA and sponsored by the State Library under State Librarian John Denison, the effort aims to improve access across counties.
Des Moines county voters approved a $154,000 bond for a new courthouse in a special election by 8,381 to 1,287. The PWA also approved a $126,000 grant to help fund the building.
Washington reports a stream of federal funds entering Iowa, estimated to exceed last year by about 50 million dollars, aimed at quelling a recession that officials say no longer exists.
L. K. Holcroft, 26, of Marshalltown, died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while hunting squirrels near Albion. He was adjusting the rifle sights and died en route to a hospital.
Robert Prochaska, 50, of Waterloo, suffered a broken back in the season's first hunting accident in Black Hawk county. He climbed a tree after a squirrel, fired, and fell about 20 feet. His condition is serious and he will be taken to University hospital at Iowa City.
In Fort Madison area Horton's creek slough near Montrose a canoe overturned killing three youths. Victims are 18 year old Drury Morgan 14 year old Chevyl Clemonson and 16 year old Leland Clemonson. William Johnson of Montrose spotted the overturned canoe and the cap nearby. The town whistle sounded as searches began for the missing boys.
The fourth annual Southern Iowa American Kennel Club show runs two days at the Ottumwa armory coliseum with 164 dogs of 27 breeds entered. FE W Leach of St Paul Minnesota supervises. Harry Osborne of Chicago serves as judge for groups except children's handling classes judged by Jack A Spear of Tipton. Dr A B Copeman of Ottumwa is chairman.
A milk truck stalled on Highway 61 and was being pushed off the road when John Henry James 24 of Fort Madison struck it with his car killing Edgar Carey 18 of New Poston Evelyn Winheim 21 also of Fort Madison who rode with James. The milk truck operators were aided by boys from Argyle at the scene.
Dr George F Sutherland of New York tells Nowa Des Moines conference there has been no loss of Methodist life in China during the war. He notes Chinese are fleeing westward with possessions while Japan gains nothing from conquered territory and predicts Japan will undermine itself.
Rumors say Representative Edward Eicher will not receive a federal judgeship or SEC post but may take an administrative job in the agriculture department. Observers note his farm policy stance and long interest in farm price control as shaping a possible appointment, with Roosevelt showing interest.
Mrs Rosanna Garren Ricks dies at 78 after a three month illness at her Coppock home. Survived by four children including Agile Wilkerson of Brighton and John Ricks of Coppock, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren. Funeral at the Christian church with hour to be announced.
Dr. Arthur Atack, pastor at Washington Methodist Church, will serve another year after the annual Fairfield conference. Readings announced appointments for Washington county churches and nearby towns, including Mr. Hebner to Brighton, and Dr. Smith to Perry in the Des Moines district.
Washington reports China has paid 264 887 47 dollars to the United States for an aerial attack on the American merchant miner President Hoover last August. The incident occurred near the Yangtze delta as refugees were evacuated in Shanghai. Seven crew were hurt and one died.
Mrs. George Clabaugh a 59 year old suburban grocery operator identified William Payne 48 of Kansas City Missouri as the man who attacked her during a 15 dollar robbery near Harcourt Payne was captured after a two mile chase and police say he admitted prior imprisonment in Missouri for a robbery his clothes were bloody when caught
A group of women from Columbus Junction Wapello Brighton Wayland and Ainsworth were seen on Washington streets Saturday afternoon. A catfish fin penetrated the knee of a man who was taken Thursday afternoon to Memorial hospital Mt Pleasant for surgery on Friday to treat an infected kneecap. He remained very ill this morning with condition not as encouraging as hoped but family members believe the operation was successful.
The annual list shows about eighty five youths heading to colleges and universities, with many from Washington bound for the University of Iowa. An additional seventy eight are enrolled at Washington junior college. The listing names students by institution across Iowa and other states, noting that some destinations are still being finalized.

In Clinton the Mississippi River rose 2.6 feet in 24 hours to 15.4 feet, flooding riverfronts and Riverview Hall. Lowlands flooded, homes cut off, and boats used for travel as engineers predict the river may reach 18.15 feet by Thursday with widespread damage to crops in southeast regions.
