W. W. Watson returns from a week in Waunseka and Tracy Minnesota noting farmers are just starting to thrash a large crop of small grain. He describes the early stage of harvest and the brisk activity across the fields.
Marshal John Foster sought a reform school order for brothers Jacob and Sherman Smithart of Hedrick after they faced five horse theft charges in as many days. They stole a horse and cart from Globe Tea Co and a buggy near a church before being captured near Competine. The judge ordered detention, as Ottumwa Courier reported earlier.
Casey Bros a flourishing livery firm in a big red brick barn on Madison Street have purchased Al Hayes barn across the street now used by McElwain and Brown. Possession takes February 1 1897. McElwain and Brown may erect a new building but not definite. Occupant of the red brick property is not yet known.
Acclaimed actor John Griffith appears Monday night as Mephistopheles in Faust at The Graham opera house. The drama follows Faust’s pact with Mephisto, his pursuit of Marguerite, the poisoning of her mother, and the tragic capture of Marguerite ending with repentance saving Faust.
Mrs L E Bailey of Staten Island New York delivers a temperance lecture at the Second United Presbyterian church at three o clock tomorrow. She comes highly commended as an able speaker with over twenty years experience.
Through attorney C. J. Wilson assignee A N Alber son asked the court to require Washington Savings Bank to turn over all sale proceeds after mortgage deduction. The judge granted the order and the court adjourned to Saturday at ten a.m. for further action.
The Narrow Gauge train, due at 10 38, arrived around two this afternoon after a wreck on the By GQ. ROXN at Latty near Burlington. Conductor Wheeler's train ran down and back to deliver the mail and express. Some Saturday visitors along the line were disappointed.
A year ago Mr Eckworth’s horse near West Washington suffered a fractured hip bone piece driven into its side. Dr James Phillips performed a neat operation to remove the fragment. The horse is recovering and expected to be usable again.
An evening program offers the Chil dren's Chorus directed by Miss Bessie Scofield at Smouse's Hall. Soloists include Mrs. D. J. Norton Miss Mabel Dewey Miss Scofield and Mr. Charles Burroughs in a refined music event.
