Kid's Day Campaign Raises Funds for Youth Work
Washington Kiwanis club reported a successful first national Kid's Day fund drive. More than £5370 was added to the youth work fund as many young salesmen canvassed the city Saturday selling Kid's Day buttons. Ted Johnson chaired the committee and called the effort very successful despite not yet reaching the YMCA television goal.

Twelve Men Die In Wood River Refinery Blast
A Shell Oil refinery explosion at Wood River Roxana killed twelve workers and left twenty injured. The cracking unit had been shut for cleaning and non sparking scrapers were in use when a blast and fire tore through the open framework, wounding and killing workers. Shell officials opened an investigation and said all on site were accounted for.

Buddy Poppy Sale Planned By Veterans Group
Plans for the 30th annual Buddy Poppy sale are set with September 22 as the distribution day in Washington. Campfire Girls and the Ladies Auxiliary will canvass districts and the business area to raise funds for local veteran relief and welfare, plus national rehabilitation services. The goal is 4000 poppies, with proceeds supporting the W F W National Home for widows and orphans at Eaton Rapids Michigan.

Funeral Thursday for Mrs. James F. Burnham
Funeral services for Mrs. James I. Burham of Chicago Illinois will be held at 2 o clock Thursday afternoon at the Jones funeral home. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. She was the former KMtsie Knauss, daughter of Mr and Mrs A J Knauss. She was married to James F Burnham on Sept 15 1897. He died in 1983.
