A one year old, Manly, Iowa, son of Mr and Mrs Tony Botello, died from a gumdrop choking incident. The mother and physician each took a different route to seek help before reuniting with fatal results.
Fire at the Shambaugh Mills owned by Ira Shambaugh destroyed two elevators and the mill in Clarinda early Sunday. Loss estimated at 50,000 dollars with about 5,000 bushels of wheat burned. Cause unknown. The original mill dates to 1855 and the present structures were built about 45 years ago.
John W Bricker of Ohio the Republican vice presidential nominee will start a 9250 mile tour October 1 to campaign across the northwest Pacific coast mountain states and southwest. The Western campaign headquarters announced the itinerary includes Ottumwa Iowa Rock Island Moline and Davenport Iowa with Rock Island rally participation.
Des Moines reports F W Hubbell president of Equitable Life Insurance of Iowa urges returning service members to retain government life policies. He notes Equitable seeks to promote retention and conversion to permanent national service life plans, highlighting reduced private costs due to government subsidies for administration, mortality, and disability losses.
Irene Ofelt announced her resignation to the Washington county hospital board effective Saturday September 23. She served as registrar and cashier and receptionist for four years having come from Burlington and will keep her Washington residence with plans for the future undetermined.
Tuesday Legion meeting will feature homebound veterans as speakers. Major Connell and Lieutenant Frank are announced by Commander Jay Bruer. Yesterday, Leon Beatty post members attended the James Olinger memorial service at Ainsworth. Teddy Stewart led the closing.

Judge Frank Bechly signed a district court order to close the Commercial Savings bank trusteeship. Trustees C. G. Schmoeller George Morrison and C. R. A large horse barn and granary nine miles south of Washington burned this morning. The fire likely started from spontaneous combustion, beginning in the haymow. Mary Catherine Knotek and Frances Sojka of the Parmerettes 4-H club earned grand Champion for their "Delicious Nutritious Kolaches" demonstration at the district team festival in Mt Pleasant. Other counties competing included Jefferson Henry Wapello Louisa Keokuk Davis Muscatine Van Buren and Lee. Washington county was represented after winning the county fair with their fruit product demo. Attendees from Washington county were Mrs Joe Knotek leader Mrs Ray Sojka Mary Lou Stacy the two team members and Ruth Foster county home economist.
A child health conference will be held at Ainsworth High School on Wednesday September 20 from 1:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The event is organized by the county health unit and Mrs. Herbert Glass of Ainsworth is available at telephone 40 for appointments.

Miss Fannie Wilson reports the death of Mrs. Fannie Cowan Coe of Everett Washington. A former Heights school principal in the late 1890s and early 1900s she left in 1904 to live near Everett after marrying Frank O. Coe. She was about 78 and the last of her immediate family.
An obituary notes the passing of a man from Fordsville and Washington communities with an old American lineage his grandfather died in the war of 1812. Surviving relatives include four children Fred Franklin Washington Mrs Hal Richards north of town Mrs Marshall Cannon Des Moines and Deward Franklin Cleveland Ohio.
Verna Belle Cave of Newell Iowa began work today at the Washington county health unit replacing Irma Thomson. Cave is a Jenny Edmundson hospital graduate from Council Bluffs and studied public health at the University of Minnesota. She previously taught rural Iowa schools after attending Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls. Thomson left Friday for Davenport and has an application pending with the United Nations relief and rehabilitation administration.
Lieutenant Margaret Winnifred Kelly, a navy nurse, writes to her parents from Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital about meeting Dr. T. M. Mast of Washington, a medical patient at the 2000 bed facility. Mast, a navy medical corps officer, was not in serious condition.
Wilber A Beenblossom age 81 longtime Marion township resident died Saturday night at Dale Beenblossom home east of Haskins after bedfast illness since 1936. Funeral Tuesday 2 PM at Eureka cemetery with Rev EF J Shook. Born March 21 1864 son of Philip and Eliza Beenblossom he married Eliza Sigafoose 1886. He leaves two sons Lester and Glen six grandchildren two in armed forces and four great grandchildren plus sister Mrs George Hopping of Brighton.
Canadian and Greek forces reached the northwest corner of the Rimini airfield, two miles from Rimini, aiming to open the Po valley route. German resistance stayed firm along the front with counterattacks repelled. Eighth Army faced strong opposition as they pressed toward San Martino on Mount Sabate near the airfield.
