Washington hosts one of its largest festivals with an estimated 10 000 to 15 000 attendees. Ideal weather fuels a second day of events including a grand parade, high quality free acts, a standout farm products show, and lively band music with numerous attractions drawing crowds from within and beyond the county.
Chairman Harold Montgomery announces awards in corn, small grains, vegetables and apples at the fall festival farm products show. Floyd Maxwell and Frank Chalupa lead yellow and white corn categories. many growers from Crawfordsville, Washington, Wellman, Ainsworth and other towns are named for top prizes. Total corn entries reach 1,012 with strong displays of onions, pumpkins, cucumbers, grapes and tomatoes.
The article lists top placings in grains and seeds including oats barley rye spring and winter wheat clover seed soybeans and an alfalfa sheaf. Notable names include John Melinski Winifred Gerdes Julius Wulf Victor Blattner Ernest Seabrouch Andy Shelangoskie Homer Pfeffer and W. T. Roberts among others with their respective towns such as Brighton Washington Ainsworth Wellman Crawfordsville Riverside Noble and Route 4.
An amateur bandit wearing grease paint and overalls robbed the Exchange Bank in Wesley Iowa, taking less than 1000 dollars after drinking heavily. He fled in a Whippet touring car heading south as law enforcement across the north central region hunted for him. The 30 year old suspect weighed about 130 pounds and stood five feet seven inches tall.
Frank Miller announced the parade would return at seven o clock Friday evening after many requests. The fall festival parade showcased antique bicycles to modern trucks farm machinery and automobiles with rainbow colored floats. Spectators marveled at its length about 45 blocks with over 70 trucks decorated cars and floats plus two hand stunts and nine teams of mules.
Fall Festival notes praise the parade led by Manton Hebner mounting an old 1890 bicycle for Phillips and Hebner drug store. Frank Macon praises the festival management while longtime Washington celebrants hail the decorated business district and the festival program. J. W. Enslin and committee are credited with a fine job.
Washington County Health Unit and P T A display images of preschool examinations and a dental honor roll. Demonstrations include home nursing training for high school girls, a lifelike doll in a basket, and a raised bed for easier patient care. A Pen knife farm model and windmill loaned by L S Hewitt highlight drainage and farm-home setups. Awards for Concord Grapes noted with Page and Breitenbach placements.
In Muscatine Iowa on September 18 the injunction suit against Norman Baker and associates in a cancer care institute neared its close with all but rebuttal witnesses finished. Baker and his lieutenant Harry Hoxsey did not testify in their defense as their attorney rested yesterday. The state had testified that unlicensed persons in the institute preserved and administered medicine, a point denied by defense witnesses. Dr J E Statler was named by defense as the physician who handled most medical work, but his testimony was not called.
Judges W C Anderson of West Liberty and W W Walters of Town City preside over divisions A for horses and mules. Winners include Meno Bontrager of Kalona first in draft hitch, Claude McCoy Crawfordsville second, Wayne Norman Ainsworth third, John R Williams Crawfordsville fourth, Charles Nicola and son Brighton fifth.
Many well made hand works are shown in the Armory women’s exhibits including rugs table covers baskets book ends and telephone covers. A state fair display lists club achievements with numbers for baskets trays lampshades candleshields waste baskets desk accessories and more. Mary Mickey's room is highlighted among 4H girls' state fair displays.
The Journal will publish at noon on Friday to allow staff to attend the Festival races and associated activities. This change affects delivery times and newsroom scheduling for the day.
In Beverly Hills Wilbur dedicates Boulder Dam at Las Vegas. Rogers notes Arizona senators may filibuster and jokes about talking longer than a senator. He quips about Vanderbilt and politics, mentioning a potential Vanderbilt for President club.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ernest Downs will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the L. A. Jones chapel with Rev. A. A. Wing officiating. She died at 2:10 a.m. at 1115 North Seventh street after a three month illness. She leaves husband and five children, plus a sister and brother and other relatives. Born January 17, 1878 in Morning Sun Iowa as Della Boltz, she married Ernest Downs 28 years ago in Washington. Burial is in Hill Crest cemetery Brighton.
Mary, a Walnut 4-H Club member, refinished the fine old walnut furniture displayed in the armory room.
Ten of the twenty prizes offered by the fall festival management are to be given away this evening at the platform on the northeast corner of the square. The official programs list the hour for the event as 8 45.
Senator Brookhart accuses Governor Roosevelt of failing to enforce the eighteenth amendment in New York and argues for a west south political alliance on prohibition. He says Roosevelt seeks repeal while admitting prohibition bans the saloon and questions the governor’s oath and actions.
The case of H. B. Gray versus Shell Petroleum opened to argument with plaintiff attorney BE C Eicher leading the address and A R Baldrige defending. Jurors not yet drawn were excused until Monday afternoon as the court viewed the fall festival parade during a half hour recess.
Chicago police arrest Matthew Capone, 21, brother of Al Capone, during a citywide crime crackdown. He was seized at a south side apartment and held at Grand Crossing Station after a Miami extradition lead from the Capone household. Al and Ralph Capone were not found.
