Lumumba Troops Drive Into Katanga

United Nations reports 800 Lumumba loyal troops crossed from southern Kivu into Katanga advancing about 25 miles toward Kongolo. At Luena in Katanga 68 civilians shot by gendarmes, heavy fighting ongoing between police and residents. Ethiopian U.N. troops defend the area. no white casualties reported.

Second Cuban Plane Seized for Debts

A second plane owned by the Cuban government was seized in New York over an unpaid 237000 debt to Harris & Co. Advertising. The aircraft, a Cubana flight with Aerovias charter, was seized after pilots claimed immunity, with bank accounts and Cubana offices also frozen amid ongoing U S actions toward Cuba.

Republican rally at Washington County fairgrounds set for Sept 24

Washington County Republican Central committee sponsors a Sept 24 rally at the fairgrounds. Dr Walter Judd will speak on national issues, with no admission charged. Supporters may contribute to the campaign fund and buy reserved seats for a $1 or more donation. Notable attendees include Congressman Fred Schwengel and Senator B B Hickenlooper.

Soviet Fighters Sweep Berlin Corridor Airspace

Soviet jet fighters in large numbers crossed the Berlin air corridors today, seeking to harass Allied traffic. Reinforced squadrons used the 20 mile wide routes to fly in and out from fields along the corridors while Western aircraft carried passengers and vital supplies into West Berlin. The flights posed a definite menace to Allied planes using the three corridors linking Berlin to the West.

District ISEA To Meet Here Tuesday

County education associations in the Southeast District of the Iowa State Education Association will meet at the Washington Ingh School next Tuesday September 20 for a conference to plan the year’s activity. Pacifists barred from Polaris submarine commissioning

Nine pacifists from Chicago attempted to board the Polaris firing submarine Robert E Lee at Newport News Virginia during the planned commissioning. They were blocked by security with no arrests. Spokesman Neil Haworth said they seek to pierce public apathy on the arms race and plan continued nonviolent action.

Lumumba May Have Been Shot at Roadblock Near Leopoldville

Rumors spread that Premier Patrice Lumumba was killed while attempting to pass a roadblock about three miles from Leopoldville. Mobutu has seized power and ordered Soviet Czech and other socialist embassies to close, with diplomats leaving for unknown destinations as U.N. protection winds down.

Plan Swimming Dance Classes at YMCA Enroll Now

Boys and girls are urged to register for YMCA swimming and dancing lessons. Dancing for seventh and eighth graders begins this evening with two hour sessions Saturdays through November 19 under Dean Garrett. Fees 4 for non members 2 for YMCA members. Swim lessons for boys in grades one to three start Monday afternoons through November 7 with choices of Monday Wednesday or Saturday. Fees 3 for eight one hour lessons. Classes cover intermediate and beginner levels.

United Nations Security Council convenes an emergency assembly tonight as seven members vote to overturn veto under the unity for peace rule. The session, amid Cold War tensions, may see Khrushchev and Hammarskjold address Congo aid and disarmament issues with Russia opposing the move.

Car Bus Crash Kills in Le Mars Man

Clair Gunther 48 of Le Mars died from a skull fracture after a collision between a car and a bus four miles south of Remsen. His twin Clem Gunther and four other bus riders were injured. none seriously. Bus passengers include Marlin Musick, Cecil Smith, Bobby Bivens, and Charles Oden.

Farm vote wooed at Iowa plowing matches

Republican and Democratic candidates wooed about 25 000 farmers at the Iowa plowing events in Guthrie Center with Sen. Burdick and Vice President Nixon drawing the crowds. Nixon Outlines Farm Plan On Campaign Trail

Vice President Richard M. Nixon promoted a new plan to handle farm surpluses during a 15 state campaign run. He spoke at Guthrie Center Iowa and prepared for a Sioux Falls speech while asserting a square deal for farmers and linking farm strength to national prosperity. A close estimate puts annual cost at up to one billion dollars for four years, before storage savings.

Sigourney Crash Claims Hayesville Man

Sigourney crash near Hayesville leaves 21 year old Larry Lee Wehr dead from skull fractures after a two car collision on a county road. William Wayne Davis, 19, of Sigourney, survived with injuries not considered serious. Wehr had been married last spring to Mary Frances Jones. he is survived by his parents.

Keota Farmer Kenneth R. Sheetz Found Dead at Home

Kenneth R. Sheetz 49 a Keota route three farmer was found dead at his home southeast of Keota. He apparently died by suicide from a gunshot. Funeral services are at 2 30 p m Sunday Powell Funeral Home Keota with military rites at the graveside. Survivors include brother Hubert W Sheetz six nieces and nephews. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.

Fairfield Bowling Alley Burglary Reported

Burglars broke into Bowl-Inn Lanes in Fairfield early Friday and stole 1200 dollars in cash and 200 dollars in checks. They also forced open a cash register and a cigarette machine, though values of those items were not determined.
