Chest Campaign In Washington Set For October 22 to 25

Washington faces its annual Community Chest drive October 22 to 25 to raise funds for the 1952 budget. Director Robert Day and co chairmen Keith Vetter will meet with the campaign committee to outline plans. Agencies have been notified of their budget shares and the YMCA will host headquarters for the drive.

Wellman restaurateur J G Lewis dies suddenly at 68

James Gillespie Lewis a longtime Wellman restaurant operator died suddenly at his home Sunday morning aged 68. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 PM in the Methodist church with Roy Bissinger in charge. burial will be in Wellman cemetery. He was born February 4 1879 in Colorado and married Ruth Gerber February 8 1915. He worked in the family restaurant with his father brother and later his sons. He belonged to the Masonic lodge and was active in civic affairs. Survivors include his wife two sons Wayne and William, a daughter Catherine, five grandchildren, and two brothers.

Offer Extension Work For County Teachers

Evening classes are offered to Washington county teachers seeking certificate renewal or standard elementary certificates. Iowa Wesleyan College and Parsons College cooperate offering three semester hour courses. Sessions run 15 weeks with weekly meetings. First class September 24 at 7 30 in the county schools superintendent office. Anyone interested should contact Mr Krabill.

Two Cases Are Settled Without Court Action

Two cases settled out of court this morning in district court. Speed vs. Zieglowsky and Garner vs. McClure were dismissed as settled without court action. Kelly vs. Bohl was set for this afternoon in district court.

Vinton Lumber Yard Fire Causes $100000 Damage

A lumber yard fire fed by paint explosions caused an estimated $100,000 damage in Vinton and threatened a city block and the Hotel across the street. The blaze destroyed the Ellis-McDowell Lumber Co office and two storage sheds, while control crews prevented spread. manager L. J. McDowell cited possible faulty wiring as a trigger.

Iowa Woman, 70 Makes Gifts to Flood Needy

A 70 year old Council Bluffs woman distributed more than 1000 dollars in gifts for flood victims. Elizabeth McCarmmon arrived in Kansas City to deliver dresses skirts blouses shoes men’s suits and a truckload of sheets towels dishes soap and cakes.

Inquest Planned After Stunt Plane Crash Kills 20

An inquest was ordered into the Sou hamlet air show disaster that killed 20 people including 13 children. A mass funeral was planned for Thursday as 25 more were injured, 10 seriously. The plane piloted by 1st Lt Norman KL Jones from Denver failed to recover from a slow roll 1600 feet above ground.

Admiral Fechteler disclosed that the navy trained carrier crews to launch atomic bombs and indicated land planes armed with A bombs would use AJ 1 Savage and P2V Neptune. County Teachers Schedule Friday Training Meetings

County superintendent Lester B. Krabill announces five all day Friday sessions for teachers through year end. In a Washington county pattern, sessions move from Saturdays to the courthouse for practical school work.
