Nixon in Iowa pauses for deaf school audience
Vice President Richard Nixon made an unscheduled stop at the Iowa School for the Deaf where he spoke slowly to aid lip readers and sign language translation. He urged that America needs the best of everybody and praised contributions from people with handicaps. A caravan of five press buses carried him toward Red Oak after a stop in Omaha where he attracted 6,648 attendees.

Nineteen Students Enroll in DE Program Expansion
Nineteen high school students join the Distributive Education program this year, up from eleven two years ago and fifteen last year. Sixteen are seniors, with George Chambers leading the program at Washington High School assisted by an advisory group of local businessmen. Students train 2 to 5 pm daily earning wages from merchants, while gaining instruction in bookkeeping retailing and salesmanship. The program, linked to DECA, lists participants with their employer stores and roles.

County farmers tour Clinton County cattle feeding operations
Fifty-two Washington County men joined a Clinton County cattle feeding tour sponsored by the Washington County Beef Producers Association and the county extension service. They visited four farms in the morning, lunch at Elvira Lutheran Church, four more farms in the afternoon, and received doughnuts and coffee after. Feeder attitudes showed concern over margins and calf prices, with some planning to idle lots rather than pay over 25 cents for calves. The visitors were impressed by the scale of operations and silos.
