Washington city council approved a centralized purchasing plan for all departments. One purchasing lead will requisition items and obtain council approval before orders, aiming for economy and better bookkeeping while reducing department heads workload.
Mrs. George Stewart of Washington walked to Ainsworth and back to settle a friendly bet. The trip took two and a half hours each way with rests and a peach break, ending in a four hour return. Her feat sparked renewed faith in travelers and public offers for rides.
Hillel Neuman of Beit Avot Israel arrives in Washington County after a short stay at Iowa State College and New York. He represents a 4 008 acre collective farm with ten workers and will exchange farming practices with local growers while visiting farm sites in Iowa and Kentucky. The visit includes a stop at Joe Jones farm near Ainsworth and the county fair on Sept 27 as a highlight of the tour.
A first in a series of art courses for rural and town teachers was held Monday evening in the office of the county superintendent. Twenty four teachers attended, including three from Jefferson county, with Dr. Fracassini from Town Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant conducting the classes for college credit. The series will continue one Monday evening each month.
Rex Beresford, extension livestock marketing specialist from Iowa State College, and Buell Lancher, agriculture economist, will speak at the livestock management and outlook meeting in the Washington YMCA. The program on Thursday evening September 18 opens at 8 p.m. Farmers from the county are invited, with Robert K. Buck serving as moderator.
Otis Edward Cahill 68 died this morning at the home of Mrs. A fk. Warner in Eldon Lawn after eight years of illness. He was born February 25, 1884 in Jewel county Kansas. Survived by wife Carrie Gladys Maggers Cahill two daughters two sons four grandchildren three brothers one sister. Burial at the Eldon Cemetery with Jones funeral home handling arrangements.
Dwight Eisenhower’s special campaign train will pass through the area on Thursday September 1s with two Washington county men aboard. Keith Norton, GOP committee secretary, will stand in for Bill Smart, who is away. Ralph Shannon, Iowa Press Association president, will also ride from Iowa City to Grinnell to meet the candidate.
Washington records the death of Mrs Eva Neill Howton of Kansas City. She taught in Washington many years ago, died August 22 in Kansas City, and was buried August 24 in Abilene Kansas. She moved to Kansas City after her marriage but remained in older residents’ memory.
Peter Eichelberger, 81, died Sunday at his home in Wayland. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church Wayland with Willard Leighty in charge and 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopedale Illinois Mennonite Church with Rev. Simon Litwiller officiating. Burial will follow at Hopedale. Survivors include William Eichelberger Wayland Mrs Paul Ingersoll Mason City and brothers Chris and Albert Eichelberger Preceded in death by spouse Matte Ackerman who died in 1945.
A new speech center opened in Washington to assist special education pupils from Kinder to high school across the county. Eleven staff members, including Jack Drake from Joplin Missouri, will conduct weekly sessions at the courthouse twice weekly for nine weeks, with parental conferences for each child.
President Truman rebuked Dwight D. Eisenhower’s critique of a federally operated health plan while emphasizing government aid to medical care. He urged cooperation with medical professionals and argued costs must be met to fund medical research and general welfare. He noted varying support and stated progress faces opposition from those who resist reform.
Russell Stutzman, 26, of Wellman, and Daniel Gingerich, 8, of Riverside, are new patients in the polio ward at University hospital in Iowa City. Three others from the area have been discharged: Clara Sehlabaugh, 21, Kalona. Martha Gingerich, 5, Riverside. Dennis Miller, 7 months old, Kalona.
George W. Johnson of 1915 Mast Washington Street brought a large vegetable to the Journal office this morning. The specimen weighed five pounds and measured 24 inches around after being grown in his garden this year.
Washington county farmer Carl Phillips was admitted to county hospital with a badly injured right hand after his hand became entangled in a corn picker at his farm on Monday. He was working alone. a hired man freed him and stopped the machine. No bones were broken and doctors hoped circulation could save the hand.
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson prepares a road show to portray Senator Robert A. Taft as the election villain and Eisenhower’s surrender victim. He plans stops in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Virginia and Maryland to argue Taft controls Eisenhower’s campaign and alters his foreign policy.
Members of the Washington Airport club will meet at the municipal airport Wednesday evening at 7 50 o'clock. There will be night flying if the weather permits.
Raymond Herman Burk was fined 300 in district court for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. His license was suspended for 90 days after indictment by the grand jury.
Legion post invites members to a fish dinner this evening starting at 6 30 P M and continuing until all are served. Attendees are urged to join tonight's dinner meeting and enjoy planned entertainment.
A marriage license was issued Monday to Robert A. Ross and Ever May Cline, both residents of Washington.
Dwight D. Eisenhower charged the Truman administration with confusing hog marketing in 1951 as he campaigned in Albert Lea Minnesota. He cited OPS price ceilings and Agriculture Department forecasts, saying farmers suffered losses while parity fell to 76 percent. He pledged a consistent GOP program for farmers and a broader change in Washington.
