President Virgil Mancher announced that 2 809 civilians attend Classes at the State University of Iowa with 763 men. About 6 450 students are on campus including army cadets navy pre flight cadets war training and medical students. Liberal arts 1 828 graduate 369 and nursing 274.

Packer settlement in OPA price violation case

Marshall Packing Co of Marshalltown Iowa agreed in US district court to a 2000 settlement in a civil action for triple damages over price violations of OPA rules. The suit claimed beef carcasses and wholesale cuts sold above maximum prices with excess totaling 1552.31 and triple damages sought totaling 4656.93. The company admitted the allegations without acknowledging wilful violation.

Electrician Henry Chisman Falls to Death in 25 Foot Fall

Cedar Rapids Monticello electrician Henry W Chisman of LaPlant Choate Co. died after brushing a 240 volt line and falling 25 feet from a ladder. Coroner R E Munden said no inquest. He called for help then slipped while breaking contact with the live wire, dying of a basal skull fracture.

Man Fined After Sending 7 Year Old for Chili at 2 A M

Cedar Rapids George Warner paid a $50 fine after admitting he sent his 7-year-old son to fetch chili at 2 am while his wife was hospitalized in University hospital Iowa City for the birth of a fourth child. The judge denounced the act as harmful to the children and warned of their need for proper care.

Third Paralysis Death At Muscatine Is Girl

Marion Edmonds, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs C A Edmonds, died at University hospital in Town City after infantile paralysis. Stricken last week her throat was affected. This marked the third death from the disease in Muscatine county. Marion was a Muscatine High School cheerleader and had planned to enter the University of Wisconsin this fall.

Fullerton Son Reported Prisoner of War Over Germany

The Fullerton family learned their son Technical Sergeant Harry L. Fullerton, a B-17 crew member, is a prisoner of war in Germany after a prior August 24 notice said he was missing in action over Gelsenkirchen on August 12. The Red Cross notified the family that he is wounded, degree unknown, with further information pending from the Provost Marshal General.

Red Cross Workers To Hear Schoonover

Sergeant Norman Schoonover, home on furlough after service in North Africa, will address Red Cross workers at 2 pm Thursday in City Hall, inviting county women from Ainsworth Crawfordsville Brighton Wellman Riverside and Kalona communities. Mrs. Dawson 91 Dies on Birthday in Washington

Mrs Martha Nancy Dawson widow of A J Dawson longtime Washington resident, died last evening at 8 30 on her 91st birthday at 214 East Jefferson. Funeral set for 2 30 Wednesday at Sherman s funeral home with Rev Basil McBee officiating. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born September 13 1852 in Portland Mills Indiana and moved via wagon train to Kansas then Iowa before settling in Washington. Survived by three daughters Anna Elizabeth Etha, one sister Mrs Sarah Taylor of Sterling Kansas. husband died March 10 1935.

War bond auction to fund third drive in county

Washington hosts a war bond auction on September 22 part of the third war loan drive. The event, sponsored by county and city war finances committees and the State theater, expects many donated items from farms and homes. Navy Trainees Invest Heavily in War Bonds in Iowa

Navy trainees at the University of Dubuque and Iowa State College are saving substantial portions of their pay in war bonds. At Dubuque 97.6 percent contribute 24.6 percent of their pay, while at Iowa State 97.3 percent set aside 36.3 percent for bond purchases.

Hose collections end September 30 in Washington county

Mrs. Fred Reid reports the War Production Board has ordered the hosiery salvage program to stop on September 30. Since its launch last November Washington county women have gathered worn silk and nylon hose, with Iowa ranking tenth nationwide as the drive nears its close.

Iowa Farm Prosperity Seen in 44 Percent Deposit Rise

Iowa farm prosperity is reflected in rural bank deposits up 44 percent from a year earlier as loans fall. W G Murray, Iowa State College economist, notes banks in 184 rural Iowa towns show deposit growth and loan declines, with war bonds offsetting the rise in deposits. Jury Case Set for September 27 in Washington County Court

In Washington County district court Judge P J Siegers set one case for jury trial at the September term. Preston Wolf versus Aura Groff arises from a Washington street automobile collision with both sides seeking damages. A hearing in Leora Nelson versus Western Mutual Fire Insurance is scheduled for Monday September 20 under new civil practice rules.

Fire damages garage near East Madison Street

Firefighters responded early this afternoon to a blaze across from the high school on East Madison Street. The fire started beside a private garage and charred the boards but caused only slight damage to the structure.

American Base Bombed by Japs

Japanese bombers caused slight material damage at Funafuti American base near Gilbert islands. The navy announced the loss of submarine Grenadier and two submarine chasers S C 694 and S C 696. The Grenadier carried about 65 crew. the chasers had about 27 each.
