Coloring Rex Allen Contest At Washington Center

Rex Allen and his Men of the West bring two concerts to the Washington Community Center offering youngsters aged 2 to 12 a chance to win cash and prizes in a free color picture contest. The Washington Lions Club will split 220 in cash between age groups with 10 prizes per division and a silver dollar for every entrant who attends. A 10 speed bicycle will be given away each night. Tickets are available from Lions Club members Glen Williams Frank Edmund Joe Jones Harrison's Department Store and other sponsors.

Flooding Drowns 13 in Kansas City Area

A series of flash floods cresting up to 20 feet devastates sections of Kansas City area. Thirteen people drown, seven in Missouri and six in Kansas, as waters force evacuations, sever power, and trigger fires and explosions at the Country Club Plaza and nearby sites. Police report looting and widespread damage as utility crews cut power to tens of thousands. Rescue workers mounted boats to pull residents from rooftops while rivers along Brush Creek threaten further flooding.

Fisticuffs at Cherokee County board meeting

Cherokee County Engineer Dick Angove will press criminal charges against Supervisor C E Perrin after a fist fight during Monday’s board of supervisors meeting. Angove was injured and claims self defense, Perrin says both were to blame amid personnel disputes involving Angove’s office.

Community Chest sets goal of 43510 in 31st drive

The Washington Community Chest launches its 31st annual fund drive with a budget target of 43510, $310 above last year. A new board chaired by the Chest directs the effort with 18 agencies funded, including Epilepsy Foundation of America, Hawkeye Area CAP and USO. The YMCA remains the largest recipient but with a reduced grant to encourage self‑fundraising.solicitations begin today in corporate, business, and school divisions, with residential outreach starting October 16 and a major Sunday effort planned.

Washington rainfall totals and overcast conditions report

Washington received 1.34 inches of rain Sunday and Monday per official weather observer. Rain fell 0.15 inches on Monday with 1.19 inches prior to 7 a.m. Today. Skies remained heavily overcast through the morning and early afternoon.

Immunization Clinic Opens Monthly At Washington County Courthouse

A monthly immunization clinic is held in the county public health nurse’s office at the Washington County courthouse every third Tuesday from 1 to 4 pm. Immunizations for DPT polio measles and rubella cost 50 cents each. Anyone under 18 must have a parent’s signature before immunization. Iowa law now requires students to be immunized against six diseases before attending school in the second semester of this school year.

Energy conservation highlighted at Farm Progress Show

Farmers will see energy saving displays from the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service at the Farm Progress Show. Exhibits cover grain drying, solar heat, a rainfall simulator, swine waste fertilizer substitutes, and home energy conservation ideas. The event runs Sept 27 to 29 at Maurice Crawford farm in Washington County with no admission fee and capacity for 100 acres of parking. More than 250000 attendees expected.

Washington County Animal Welfare League forms in county

An organizational meeting of the Washington County Animal Welfare League met Saturday in the YWCA room Washington. The group discussed goals cruelty prevention education for children and overpopulation solutions. Six members will attend a September 24 euthanasia symposium in Amana then meet Dr. George E. Schoel to learn about incorporation legal responsibilities and starting welfare work. Residents may join by contacting Mrs. Don Jackie Wells.
