Bombing suspects may be in Canada

Madison officials said two missing Armstrong brothers Karleton 25 and Dwight 20 may be hiding in Canada after a 1970 Sterling Hall bombing that killed physicist Robert Fassnacht. Sheriff Vernon Leslie and Detective Charles Lulling reported sightings in Ottawa and Toronto youth districts and said they were pursuing a hot lead with the RCMP.

Southeast Iowa CAO to Receive $35 760 Grant

The Southeast Iowa Community Action Organization in Burlington received a 35760 grant from the U S Labor Department to fund part time jobs for disadvantaged students during the school year. The agency serves Washington County and has 48 enrollees as part of nine Iowa Neighborhood Youth Corps grants announced today.

County order renewed in Washington County valuation appeal

Washington County Assessor Ernest Lund represented the county in a Des Moines hearing on a one percent increase for residential real estate outside towns. The original 11 percent rise was trimmed to one percent after state review and is to continue. Officials in four Iowa counties earlier won rescission of statewide valuation orders, with hearings to continue over the next two weeks.

Pledge Iowa seeks changes to municipal courts in 1972

Clinton Representative Charles Pelton says the 1972 Iowa Legislature will reform municipal courts to address constitutional concerns raised by Iowa Supreme Court justices. He notes county residents are excluded from juries and judge elections, and favors countywide juries if courts remain countywide. Pelton also supports amending the reform bill to keep municipal courts but adjust their structure and jurisdiction.

Two Die In Weekend Iowa Road Crashes

Two Iowans died in in state weekend crashes Burnell Mary Rogers 33 of Waterloo and Roger Kreger 28 of Elwood were killed. Rogers died after a motorcycle was struck by a car driven by Larry Kirby 22 of rural Waterloo near a Waterloo intersection. Kreger died when his car hit a railroad overpass four miles south of Maquoketa on U S 61.

Attica Prison Riot Ends in Nine Hostages Dead

Riot leaders killed nine hostages as National Guardsmen and police stormed Attica Prison. Officials report 38 hostages held five days, 29 freed with several seriously injured. Guard William Quinn died from injuries after being thrown from a window. Amesty demands were rejected and the assault began around 10 a.m. EDT amid tear gas and heavy rain.

Two cars damaged in crash near Green Meadows

Sunday traffic collision left two vehicles with extensive damage but no serious injuries. Mary C Schlapkohl of Washington waited to turn onto a gravel road when Gordon E Wales of St. Joseph Mo struck her rear. Damages were $850 and $1200 respectively. Wales was charged for failure to have his car under control.
