The US Army Corps of Engineers announced the availability of more than 74 000 Christmas trees for commercial cutting on portions of the Libby Reservoir Project as school starts in Libby Montana.
The Civil Aeronautics Board approved a six per cent increase for domestic airline fares after October, rejecting a ten per cent request by major carriers. The six-month year saw earlier boosts totaling about three per cent in March, with airlines claiming earnings were 50 percent below the prior year despite inflation and wage deals. The board noted the request could be unjust but allowed the additonal revenue.
No public decisions emerged from Friday's top level Vietnam talks with President Nixon. White House officials delayed disclosures, shifting focus to Camp David and possible requests to Congress. Bombing halt confusion persisted as brief suspension was lifted amid Communist actions.
In Vinton Iowa University of the Regents heard that capital funding shortfalls have stretched the Iowa School for the Deaf beyond capacity. Superintendent Dr Joseph Gaingreco said enrollment has risen to 385 this year from 340 last year, with space cramped in dormitories and classrooms. An emergency 100000 dollars is proposed for temporary facilities. Regents plan a full study for October, considering shifting some students to public schools if needed.
UPI reports a three way race to succeed Everett Dirksen as Senate GOP leader. Senator Roman Hruska of Nebraska plans to announce, opposing Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania and Howard Baker Jr. of Tennessee, Dirksen's son in law. Margaret Chase Smith calls for a GOP meeting to elect soon. Baker, Scott push with pledges and hopes of solid votes.
Viet Cong guerrillas bombed a Saigon self defense force headquarters at Bath, killing three Vietnamese, including two SDF members. It was the first Saigon attack by Viet Cong in four months. U S B52s resumed bombing with 450 tons on four areas after Nixon ordered a pause end. An Hoa attack killed eight civilians. 15 Viet Cong dead, 51 government troops dead in pursuit. B52 strikes targeted Phu Cat Phuoc Long and Phu Yen areas. Ground fighting described as light to intermittent with 42 targets shelled.
Iowa state institutions struggle to buy coal as winter nears. Marshall Berry, business manager for the Iowa Blind and Sight Saving School at Vinton, reported no bids for a 1,000 ton coal bulk purchase and doubts for the remaining 800 tons. Regents consider higher bulk-rate costs and gas-fueled main buildings. Wayne Moore of Iowa State University warns fuel costs may rise over five percent, totaling about 45,000 dollars in extra winter maintenance.
A fire at the Bob Falb Implement Co. in Elgin Iowa gutted the large concrete block building after a worker dropped a trouble light and broke a bulb igniting gasoline. Employee Paul Larson was treated for minor burns. Fire crews from Elgin and nearby towns prevented spread to a nearby liquor store. the store and another building sustained smoke damage.
