Record grain forecast signals bigger surplus drive in 1969
Washington. A new forecast by U S Department of Agriculture shows a record grain output this year, heightening expected government efforts to curb surpluses in 1969. Feed grains may total 177.1 million tons, with corn at 4.6 billion bushels. Freeman outlined 1969 price supports requiring at least 20 percent idle base acreage, potentially rising to 25 percent, to curb production amid growing surpluses. Wheat prospects slip 1 percent but still an all-time high at 1.6 billion bushels, soybeans at a record 1.1 billion, and overall crop volume index at a new peak. Pasture conditions strongest since 1961.
