Heat cuts Gemini 11 spacewalk short in Houston

Astronaut Richard Gordon cut his 115 minute spacewalk to 57 minutes because heat and sweat impaired vision. Charles Pete Conrad ordered Gordon back early while Gordon managed to reach the Agena and connect a tether. The mission aims include a high altitude record and a later stand in the hatch. Ground control reported Gordon tired but continuing the work, with planned camera and possible window cleaning tasks. The Gemini 11 mission is set to splash down Thursday in the Atlantic after a short extra-vehicular activity schedule.

Burlington youth’s gun battle ends fatal near farm

A Waterloo, Wisconsin teen held a Burlington farmer captive for about 40 minutes and died after a Western-style gun battle with four lawmen. Paul Christensen, 17, confronted deputies and patrolmen at his farm home, fired four times, and was fatally wounded in the right shoulder. None of the officers or the farmer was injured.

Soucek and Robison Join Washington School Board

Henry Soucek was re elected to the Washington Community School board in director district two with 25 votes. L. W. Robison won in district three with 132 votes in a three way race where Lyle Wilson received 67 and Robert 38. Total votes 243 in area three. The district approved the three fourths tax for Area Ten Community College with 152 yes and 145 no. Ballots exhausted due to heavy turnout as polls closed at 7 pm.

Booster Club Meeting Tonight at Fair Grounds

Booster Club members and men of the community are urged to attend tonight at 7 30 p m at the Fair Grounds to hear Coach Roger Harrington of the Washington High School team. Films of the Washington Oskaloosa game will be shown after 8 p m. If delayed, arrive by 8 p m to hear Harrington discuss the game. By laws adoption and board elections are on the agenda.

Murder charge filed against Iown man

Charles A. Kronick, 30, arrested and charged with the weekend murder of his elderly landlady, Mrs. Bertha Kaufmann, 80. Kronick reported finding the body in her apartment, bond set at 25000, preliminary hearing scheduled Sept. 23. Police say she was beaten with an electric clothes iron. No robbery motive yet determined.

Highland voters elect two directors to district board

Highland voters elected Wen ger and Lyle Fox to three year terms on the Highland district school board. Wenger led area two, Fox was candidate at large. both ran unopposed. Voters approved sale of a school owned house at Ainsworth by 83 to 13. Levy for Community College for Area Ten failed 49 to 47.

Two Planes Reported Lost in Viet Nam Raid Escalation

U S air forces hit targets in North Vietnam with 170 tons dropped Monday, near the 17th parallel, while a second plane was downed in South Vietnam. A berserk U S soldier killed a GI and wounded two others in Saigon as C47 gunships aided Green Beret camps near Tra Khue River. Additional U S troops landed at Vung Tau as raids widened from the demilitarized zone to Hanoi Haiphong industrial regions.

Desegregation Day Violence in Grenada School

A small group of Black students tried to enter a desegregated Rundle High School in Grenada Mississippi as a white mob attacked with bricks and rocks. State troopers watched and did not intervene while city police arrested a Black man leaving the campus. Police later dispersed the crowd amid protests by Black leaders and newsmen. FBI and UPI officials condemned the assault as editors urged protection for reporters and citizens.

Militants seize Atlanta meeting amid Black Power cries

In Atlanta militants disrupted a church meeting of moderate leaders triggering violence in a Negro section two miles from last week's riot site. Willie Ricks shouted Black Power, prompting threats against Mayor Ivan Allen. Hosea Williams urged restraint as police dispersed about 300 demonstrators.

Heilman Named State Bank Director in Washington

Logan T Heilman of Washington has been named a director of the Washington State Bank to fill the vacancy from John Knotek's death. The election was announced by Lee Holland executive vice president. Heilman has 27 years with the bank and has been cashier since January 1960. He has served on the Washington school board YMCA board chairing the Community Chest and as an officer in Y's Men and in his church, currently vice president of Rotary club.

Waco votes down $675,000 bond proposal

Voters in the Waco Community School District defeat a $675,000 bond issue Monday in what may be a record turnout. Final unofficial totals show 762 opposed to 211 in favor. Voters also elect Boyd Garrett and Maynard Widmer to the district school board and reject a three-fourths mill tax levy for the Area 16 vocational school, 628 to 297.

Drought hurts crops in Washington County across August

Washington County crops suffered from moisture shortage in August. Extension director Jim Frier says rain now would help only meadows and new seedings. He notes corn and soybeans will have uneven yields, with some good and poor results.
