Twelve worthy organizations will share the chest budget as the Washington Community Chest announces a 1955 budget of 24300 dollars. Under campaign chairman W O Boshart volunteer workers plan the annual drive from October 18 to 22.
The 1955 budget outlines allocations for many local groups including the YWCA, YMCA, Lake Darling Youth Center and Washington Recreational Council. New entrants include the Iowa Association for Mental Health with 200 dollars and National Travelers Aid with 25 dollars, while United Defense Fund is dropped. A hearing and board approval govern annual sharing and allotments. Tom Duncan serves as Chest president.
Ottumwa, Ottumwa County witnesses reported John Giffen aged 45 was killed when a horse threw him in the south Ottumwa residential district after being spooked by barking dogs. The incident occurred Sunday and the horse reared during the fright.
Iowa Republican Chairman Don Pierson said President Eisenhower does not want a rubber stamp Congress but seeks a working majority in both houses. Pierson arrived from Denver where 19 Midwestern and Rocky Mountain state GOP leaders discussed campaign plans with the President. He quoted Eisenhower as promising to aid campaigns within the dignity of his office and said the President was not targeting any specific candidates.
The average man weighs about one pound more at the North Pole than at the Equator due to surface speed and centrifugal effect. The Earth spins fastest at the Equator, reducing apparent gravity slightly compared with higher latitudes.
Thousands respond to Garry Moore's national plea sending nickels to Mrs. Margaret Deibel in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. A Seattle of envelopes and sacks arrived as the Deibels tally donations possibly totaling up to 100000 dollars. The post office hired extra staff to handle the mail while the couple weighs tax implications and uses for the funds.
Hong Kong based reports state Communist China claims to have freed three Americans two news correspondents and a sea captain but the U S Consulate says they were not aboard the Canton to frontier train. Names cited are Richard Applegate Don Dixon and Capt Ben Krasner with the yacht Kert confiscated.
J F Hladky Jr of Cedar Rapids Gazette Co was reelected president of the Iowa Daily Press Assn at an annual clinic with about 350 attendees. C W Moody of Burlington Hawkeye Gazette was reelected vice president. New three year board members include R R Jackson Spencer Howard Wilson Carroll Henry Hook Davenport and Robert Beck Centerville.
Leo Bodenberger of Perry is to be arraigned early this week on a murder charge in the death of his brother John Bodenberger 62. John had been reported missing last Wednesday after a check signed in his name was cashed in Des Moines. Authorities found John’s body near the Raccoon River south of Perry. A coroner's jury said the death came from a blunt instrument with malice aforethought, though a shotgun wound to the forehead was noted. The motive cited was estate disputes.
Newport Rhode Island reports its 207 year old Red Wood Library in the original building says comic books are not a concern. Circulation of children’s books increased about 20 percent from last year, signaling strong youth reading interest.
William G. Karston 29 of Hamilton Illinois admits an El Paso Texas holdup in which another man is already serving a term. He had previously admitted the holdup and signed a statement after meeting an El Paso attorney at Fort Madison state prison. Karston has been sentenced to hang on August 15 1955 for shooting Wendell Jones a Pulaski Iowa farmer during the $81 July robbery. An appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court has been filed at Bloomfield.
DES MOINES UP report quotes J F Rabe secretary of the narcotics division noting sleeping pills or barbiturates are not regulated by state drug laws and can be carried openly. He calls for a new law to criminalize possession without a physician prescription as lawmakers prepare to act. He warns schools face marijuana risk and urges vigilance against gift cigarettes used by pushers to start teen habits costing ten to fifteen dollars daily.
Ten Air Force personnel died when a four engined C124 transport crashed at Thule Air Force Base Greenland shortly after takeoff for the United States. Five crew members survived the tragedy. Names of those aboard were withheld pending next of kin notifications.
Senator Joseph McCarthy received speaking invitations from about six senators up for re election in the next congressional campaign. He said he has not committed due to the ongoing censure investigation and will announce his campaign plans after the hearings conclude.

Brig. Gen. Ralph Zwicker testified that Sen. McCarthy viewed the Army explanation letter on the Peress case before the Feb 18 hearing. Roy Upside Down Timm, famed Midwest stunt pilot, accepts terms to appear at the Iowa Air Days show Sunday at Washington Municipal Airport. He will fly a high powered inverted ship under new CAA safety rules with Major Davis and others alongside.
A court of honor for Boy Scouts of Troop 237 will be held at the Washington Methodist church tonight. The ceremony will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6 30 p.m.
A Stevens letter to McCarthy dated February 16 acknowledges defects in how the Army handled the Peress case and promises those errors will not be repeated.

Swirling flood waters from hurricane Edna killed 22 people and caused up to 100 million dollars in damage across Maine and New England. Maine reported eight drownings and seven million dollars in damage from Edna, with New Hampshire also heavily affected.
Eighteen people died in Iowa highway crashes over the weekend, the highest toll in state history. The fatalities came from multiple crashes including a six dead two car head on near Denison and a four dead collision on U.S. 218 south of Mount Pleasant, among others. Victims include Mrs Irmal Youed and Mrs Blanche McBroom of Fort Madison, James Becker of Mount Pleasant, and four teens in the Denison crash.
