Weekend Fires Cause Near Half Million Dollars In Damage
Three Iowa fires over the weekend caused extensive damage. In Muscatine the J. C. Broad department store blaze began in the basement and raged about 10 hours, with about 200000 dollars in damage and insurance on much of the stock. Oskaloosa’s Ideal Lumber Yard burned Saturday night, estimated at 200000 dollars. Nevada’s Chet Gifford Grain Co. elevator saw 2500 dollars in damage from a blaze that threatened nearby fuel tanks but left most oats intact. Fire crews from surrounding towns aided efforts.
