Three members of the Lawson Palmer family die when an auto hits a concrete bridge abutment on Highway 63 south of Ottumwa. Victims are Max Lawson 27 singer Mrs Harry Lawson 45 and Mary Palmer 69 grandmother. Sheriff says Lawson passed a car and struck a left side road wood post.
Des Moines Better Business Bureau manager George MacDonald warned widows about a fraudulent scheme in eastern Iowa. An actor posing as an agent for major insurers visits homes, offers to investigate a $1,000 policy, and charges widows $10 to $50, preying on excitement over the payout.
The Ottumwa workers contract covers six local firms and sets a 61 cent hourly wage for cartage and rail freight handling. Union representative Carl Keal says the agreement follows the Burlington Iowa City pattern and runs until November 15 when the Burlington contract ends and higher pay is pursued.
DES MOINES Iowa Dr H A Seidell chief of the bureau of animal industry in the Iowa department of agriculture submitted his resignation to Secretary Mark Thornburg. Thornburg would not confirm but did not deny that Seidell may leave Oct 1. He is set to begin a two week vacation starting Monday.
Clifford a 51 year old Elmhurst New York man suffered multiple deep cuts after breaking a window and leaping from the Portland Rose train near Blairstown. He was found by section hands and taken to St Luke’s Hospital in serious condition. Railroad officials said he had fallen ill at Pocatello Idaho and members of the Pocatello American Legion post sent their chaplain to accompany him home.
Six children of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Dunwald were injured when their car swerved off a Waterloo road into Goose Creek southwest of the city. Maurine, 17, the driver, suffered a fracture of the right wrist along with bruises and cuts. the other four children had minor injuries. The vehicle skidded left, clung to the creek bank for about 50 feet, then overturned in five feet of water.
A steer was fatally injured on the highway near Cotter when it wandered into a car driven by C R McCutchen of Washington. The vehicle sustained damage but no occupants were harmed.
Washington junior college at the Washington airport seeks ten students and two alternates for a fall civilian pilot training class. Dean Harland Mead says the group must be ready to start by Oct 1 with an airport operator and flying instructor in place. Snodgrass and wife plan to leave airport duties due to contract deadlock as new airport management plans advance with Ralph Scott as operator.
A morning crash at the junction of highways 218 and 92 east of Ainsworth destroyed two cars and sparked explosions. Five people fled the flames with two injured, Higgins of Kansas City and E Ray Hall of Jefferson City taken to the county hospital. Mrs Bartlett and Mrs Hall escaped uninjured.
Washington school authorities said today that local leaders in the airport matter backed plans to secure planes equipment and a qualified instructor to meet federal requirements so training can proceed without interruption. Civil aeronautical inspectors reportedly endorse the plan if local requirements are met.

Funeral services will be held in Chicago for William Walton DeGolyer who died of pneumonia at the county hospital after injuries from a west side automobile accident. Burial will be at Mount Greenwood cemetery with a Masonic grave service. DeGolyer, born May 29 1871 in Chicago, was a former Illinois Central railway switch tender. He retired about a year ago and lived with his niece Mrs D B Hawkins in Omaha while arrangements were made by L A Jones funeral home.
Driving licenses were granted to nine persons to drive cars at the weekly tests conducted by a member of the state highway patrol yesterday. Five failed on the written tests. Four instruction permits were issued. Licensees include Robert Custer Vincent Krabill Sara Fleury Raymond Kerr Ruth Flood William Hammer of Washington Keith Lemley Hazel Glider of Kalona Louise Harter of Crawfordsville Lenard Spenser of Kinross. Chauffeurs licenses were granted to Cloyd Garrett of Washington Ralph and Lloyd Mitler of Kalona.
County teachers gathered at the courthouse for a conference chaired by Lester B Kra bill, county superintendent of schools. The session featured a school health program with Dr. Ruth Church of the County Health unit and demonstrations by county nurses. J K Krause explained cooperation between instructors pupils and the sanitation program.
The airport and junior college training school attract support from local leaders who see the facility as vital to the defense program. About 80 students were taught to fly last year and several former students have joined the army flying corps, illustrating the school's role in producing pilots for civil and military use.

General John J. Pershing, aged 81, in a message published in the Army and Navy Journal says U S soldiers are the finest in the world and ready to defend their country at all costs. He notes 1,500,000 active duty troops and remains confined in Walter Reed hospital.
The body of Roy Newkirk, 40, missing since last Monday, was recovered in the Marengo river about one mile northeast of Marengo. He had parked his automobile near the drowning spot.
The Panama flag vessel Montana was torpedoed in the north Atlantic between Iceland and Greenland. All 26 crew members were non Americans and were adrift in lifeboats. This follows the sinking of another Panama flag freighter in Icelandic waters as Roosevelt vowed protection for merchant ships of all flags.
Milwaukee report says Homer L. Chaillaux foresees the American Legion relaxing its Russia stance by backing aid to the Soviets in the fight against Nazi Germany. The 23rd annual convention opens tomorrow with a Roosevelt message to be read by Frank Knox announcing foreign policy directions.
Alvin G. Roehr, 74, died from injuries after a tractor and plow ran over him in a field at USAGF Iowa. Authorities believe he was thrown when the tractor struck a fence during turning. He leaves three daughters and five sons.

A former resident Mrs J L Brazee, about 78, died at her Denver home yesterday. Born at Mt Pleasant, she came to Columbus Junction at age six with her parents William and wife. Survived by daughter Mrs McGrew of Denver, three grandchildren, brother Ernest of Columbus Junction, and sister Mrs Bert Mumper of Davenport. Funeral services will be held in Denver.
Deaths reported near Waukee as three Greenfield women, Mrs. Orie Butler, Mrs. Ernest Butler, and another woman, died when their car struck an oil truck two miles east of the city.
German supreme command says Luftwaffe strikes on all Russian sectors, with attacks around Leningrad and progress near Konotop southeast of Gomel. Soviet dispatches report relentless Red Army counteroffensives south of Bryansk and near Kiev. German submarines sink a large convoy in the North Atlantic.
Ralph E. Eyestone died at his home in Carrington Wyoming after a long illness. He was about 75 and survived by his wife Blanche Downing Eyestone and daughter Ruth R. Be McLeod of Carrington. Burial will be in Corrington with services pending. He was born in Lexington and lived on a farm before moving to Groton South Dakota and later Carrington. He was a lifelong Methodist and celebrated a golden wedding in 1940. He leaves three brothers, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews. a daughter Doris died in 1913.
