Battles rage along border as India and Pakistan clash near Lahore

UPI reports armored columns and air forces fight in Kashmir and Punjab with both sides claiming gains. Indian raids hit East Pakistan bases near Lalmonirhat and Thakurgaon while Pakistani forces claim to have halted Indian advances and destroyed numerous tanks and aircraft. Iowa Democrats approve primary endorsements compromise

Community School District Polls Open Monday

Polls open 12 noon to 7 p.m. Monday September 13 to elect directors in districts three and four. District three votes at Walnut School District schoolhouse, district four at Washington City Hall. Bob Kleese runs unopposed in district three to fill the unexpired term of William Crayne. Lewis McFadden opposes incumbent Carl Dallmeyer in district four. Frank Kos is unopposed for district treasurer.

Gangland figure shot near Chicago

Mandel Skar a 41 year old reputed crime syndicate front man who aimed to create a little Las Vegas near Chicago was fatally shot as he drove his 1965 black Pontiac Bonneville into a parking garage behind his Lake Shore Drive apartment early today. He had coast to coast dealings and faced a tax indictment of over one million dollars.

Rabies Shots Out of Reach for Stranded Father in South Dakota

Gerald Covey, 43, bitten by a rabid skunk near his trailer, cannot afford the injections. A Valentine clinic and a Franciscan mission have helped with some doses, but Covey’s bills total about 300 dollars and he lacks transport and funds for further treatment. Doctors warn death could come within 90 days if untreated, while Covey remains hopeful despite severe financial and health pressures.

County farmers hear 1965 corn price support details

Howard Lins, chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee, announces 1965 county corn price support will average 1.23 per bushel in Washington County. The national average is 1.25, with a 20 cent payment and a 1.05 loan rate. Loans depend on actual production. payments on normal production. Applications at ASCS County Office. loans mature July 31, 1966.

Viet Cong attack across northern Saigon area persists

Viet Cong guerrillas pressed four assaults 35 to 50 miles north and east of Saigon as U S and Vietnamese government forces counterattacked. A 159-air sortie day followed a Ba Lang An Peninsula operation that left 198 Viet Cong dead and 49 captured. Xuan Loc, Gia Tan, Tuc Trung, and Gia Kiem faced heavier fighting with limited government casualties reported.
