Francis Roberts warned his five year old son Jimmie to practice before fishing. The boy attempted practice and tangled fishing line in the washing machine, prompting Mrs. Roberts to spend an hour untangling the mess.
Labor Secretary Martin P. Durkin resigns amid a public clash over Taft-Hartley revision. He accuses White House aides of reneging on a labor reform pledge, while AFL CIO leaders vow tougher bipartisan fights and predict the administration will seek a nonunion successor.
Explosions tore up a mile and a half of Cleveland streets killing one woman and injuring 61. The blasts late Thursday damaged gas mains or sewers along West 117th Street, spread toward Lake Erie, collapsing cars and hurling pavement while authorities counted nearly 5 million dollars in damage. Catherine Szabo, 406, died at St. John’s Hospital two hours after the blast. At least 17 bystanders were hospitalized.
In the Washington Toastmasters club semi annual election on Thursday evening Vern Sladek was chosen president. Other officers named were Joe Knotek vice president May Workman secretary and treasurer Gerald Brenneman sergeant at arms John Gamon deputy governor. The new officers assume duties on October first. Sladek succeeds Frank Patterson as president.
Senator McCarthy disclosed a 1952 Far East Command report to reporters claiming it praised Communism. The Army said the document remained restricted security information until Thursday and disputed McCarthy’s characterization while defending the report’s broader conclusions.

The newly formed Boy Scout district for Washington and Johnson counties and part of Iowa county will hold its inaugural meeting at Kalona high school on Tuesday at 7:30 p m. District officers will be elected and a name chosen. Attending scouters include Dr R Q Eastland Myron Salladay Sam MecCleery Luther Crom and Harold Kerr.
Edward J. Collins, 47, of Des Moines, suffered lacerations and possible skull fracture when his car hit a southbound semi on highway 22 218 east of Riverside. Charlies Raforth, 27, of Fairmont Minn, burned after his truck overturned and burned. Both injured went to Mercy Hospital Iowa City. Truck carried 50 cases of eggs. Collin s car damage estimated 2400 and truck 5500.
Dr Frank E Coburn associate professor of psychiatry and head of the outpatient clinic at the State University of Iowa psychiatric hospital will speak in Washington September 22. Sponsored by the Washington County Teachers Association extension service and the YWCA the talk is for teachers parents and all who volunteer leadership with teenagers. The topic is Understanding Teen-agers and the speech will begin at 8 15 p m in the high school.
Riverside fire crews were called at 10 20 a m to the Wilfred Thomann farm on route one Riverside where a large hay stack burned interiorly though the exterior remained intact. Investigators doubt any hay will be usable as feed.
Polls opened with very low turnout as residents decide on staggered four year terms for city councilmen. At noon 27 votes were cast in the third ward and 13 in the fourth ward, with wards elsewhere expected to be similar.
A wide area around St. Louis felt an earth tremor today with Edwardsville and Belleville reporting shaking and toppled items. The quake struck shortly before 1 30 p.m. CDT, causing brief switchboard jams at police, newspapers, and radio stations. No damage was reported.
Richard William Thompson 25 and Warren K Sherer 30 both of Des Moines died in a late Thursday night crash when their car left Highway 69 six miles north of Osceola. The car rolled down a 15 foot embankment around 10 10 p m. Sherer was the son in law of Wayland postmaster Edward Wittrig. his wife is Mary Wittrig. No other passengers were found. Nearby farmer Walter Vawn said he heard the crash and rushed to the scene. Thompson left behind three children and Sherer one.
Funeral services for Mrs Anna M Trier 77 longtime Keota resident will be at St Marys Catholic church in Keota Saturday morning. She died Wednesday September in Gries Nursing home Sigourney after three months illness. Born November 5 1875 in Washington county to John and Catherine Palm she was married to Joseph Trier February 7 1899. Survivors include son Raymond and daughter Mrs Ralph Sonday 12 grandchildren three great grandchildren seven sisters and one brother. She was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Clark 83 will be at 4 p m Saturday September 12 in the Crawfordsville Methodist church Rev Franklin Cooley and Rev Earnest Smith are in charge Burial will be in Crawfordsville cemetery Jones funeral home handles arrangements Mrs Clark died at 12 20 p m Thursday in the Bolar Nursing home She was born March 9 1870 near Crawfordsville daughter of Joseph Whyte and Emma Lytle Whyte married J T Clark Sept 3 1888 He died in 1934 Survivors include two sons Earnest Clark Crawfordsville and Lloyd Moothart Washington Also seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren Preceded in death by one daughter

Bill Nelson of 1026 East Adams Street donated a twin potato while John Rath donated a twin tomato grown at Ainsworth. The items join the Journal collection as recent additions from area residents.
Former Communist Party member John Lautner testified before the Senate Investigating Subcommittee that American Reds have worked for the United Nations and that Soviet and Iron Curtain delegates have met secretly with U S party leaders. He described the UN as a perfect venue for exchange of experiences among communist groups.
Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. said the government will prosecute any federal employee who aided Warren Stephenson in seeking a 4 percent fee on a naval rocket launcher contract. He ordered the FBI to conduct a full investigation at the Navy's request. He warned that leaks from officials could lead to charges if found. Brownell cited Eisenhower’s opposition to influence peddling and urged a thorough probe into any government connections.
David Charles Truesdale a former Washington resident turned minister died August 28 He was a graduate of Washington Academy and married Anna Wells of Washington He sang with a quartet during summers and in Chautauqua work years ago.
A seven legged frog with three extra legs attached to its left rear leg will be studied by El Dorado High School biology students this fall. The odd amphibian was caught in Walnut River by two local teenagers.
President Eisenhower plans to wait until he returns to Washington to name a new chief justice for the Vinson vacancy. Assistant Secretary Snyder said no announcement is expected in Denver. Nixon and the President are to discuss the chief justice pick and a new labor secretary answer after Durkin’s resignation.
Robert D. Wells a 49 year old Davenport attorney won 21 of 35 votes to become the first district representative on the new state board of public instruction created by the 1963 legislature. Marion M. George of Washington and Booker Smith of Fairfield also ran. The board will elect the state superintendent and assigns duties across eight districts. The gathering was at the Washington County courthouse this morning.
Washington county Legion members and families will gather at the Youth Center site on Lake Darling Sunday September 13 for a potluck dinner. Entertainment will be provided by county posts with Brighton post hosting the Legion and auxiliary members and families.
