Double homicide at Shueyville farm in Johnson County
In Shueyville Iowa the bodies of George Novotny and his wife Mary were found shot in their farm home east of town. Mrs Novotny was killed outright while her husband wandered the room before dying. The shootings occurred late Saturday night or yesterday and were discovered by Gershon Cook after noticing a stray horse.

Stewart School Opens Today with Flower Congratulatory Gifts
The first of Washington's two new 1939 elementary schools began use today on North Fourth Avenue. Pupils registered, classes organized, then dismissed for the day with plans for a full schedule Tuesday. Flowers from the Chamber of Commerce, the Journal and the National Bank of Washington decorate rooms. Temporary furnishings missing include kindergarten and first and second grade tables, to be shipped this week. Superintendent Ralston says the move went smoothly despite finishing work. Harry Bowles supervises the new school alongside the old Lincoln and Wallace buildings.
