In Des Moines Harry Coleman, age 23? is described as willing to cut $1 from his $23 monthly old age pension due to the belief that the twenty third of each month brings bad luck. He made the request at the county old age pension office as investigators promised to study the matter.
Robert KH Neff administrator of state university hospitals will become president of the American Hospital Association at Atlantic City New Jersey next week. He will head the national group representing hospital interests and medical care providers.
Des Moines reports the Iowa highway fatality toll for 1937 rising to 340 after four new auto deaths and an official briefing by Horace Tate deputy commissioner. The state health department added six previously unreported deaths, though names were unavailable. The tally shows 265 highway crash deaths up to July 1, higher than the International News Service count.
Belmond Harold Gates, a farmer near Rowan, is jailed in Clarion after 18 year old Guy Withers died from gunshot wounds suffered during a raid on a watermelon patch. Ebenezer Williamson, 96, Eldon’s last Civil War veteran, died at home after a brief illness. A harness maker, farmer, and former lumberman, he lived in Eldon 34 years and is survived by five daughters and a son. Funeral services Sunday in Ul don with a military graveside ceremony by the American Legion.
President Dunham Morrison of the Washington county Iowa alumni society named a committee to organize the annual Iowa alumni banquet to be held late next month. The kickoff dinner at the Congress hotel introduced plans and featured speakers on football prospects from Wash ington high school and the junior college.

Clyde Derrie a 29 year old outlaw known for past gun battles and the kidnapping of New York state patrolmen Patrick Cummings and Harry Pettit surrendered peacefully in a vacant Rome house after an intensive hunt. Police led by Chief Owen moved in with machine guns and rifles but fired no shots. Derrie had forced the officers to drive to an abandoned farm and held them in a garage until nightfall before hijacking their revolvers and escaping set.
