Ray Schnell, once lieutenant governor, lost $3,500 worth of hay in a ranch fire near Dickinson this week. He quipped that his boast about abundant hay did not really mean he intended it to burn, keeping his humor intact.
In Washington a memorial service honored Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson. Eisenhower and Truman joined hundreds of mourners at Washington Cathedral, then Vinson was laid to rest at Union Station en route to Louisa Kentucky. The ceremony recalled Vinson’s role in administering the oath of office to both presidents.
Washington sources say Warren L. Stephenson a Republican controversial figure tied to Eisenhower era campaigns will not receive the federal or party appointment he sought. A GOP spokesman notes he holds no current party post and faces scrutiny amid alleged influence peddling in military contracts. The House subcommittee hearings revealed he claimed Navy connections and shared bid prices for rocket launcher contracts.
About 600 CIO United Packinghouse Workers reported for work at Swift and Co. packing plant after a one day walkout but the plant remained closed. Local 71 head E. J. Sammons said workers would report again Friday while a company spokesman said no work was scheduled today.
Washington county farmers and others are invited to attend the annual livestock and feed outlook meeting on Wednesday evening September 16. Sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Farm Business Association and the Iowa extension service, the session will be in the sale barn at Townsley park with speakers Rex Beresford and Dean Huston discussing the livestock and feed situation for the coming year.
Hong Kong reports Sir Charles Lambe flew from Singapore to Hong Kong to lead an inquiry into the shelling of a British navy launch by a Chinese Communist warship. Seven sailors died, six navy and one Hong Kong defense force member, with five wounded.
Mrs. Gertrude Clark of Crawfordsville died at 12 20 PM after two years illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 4 PM at the Crawfordsville Methodist church with Rev Franklin Cooley officiating. Burial will follow in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survivors include sons Earnest Clark of Crawfordsville and Lloyd Moothart of Washington. Funeral arrangements are by Jones funeral home.
John A. Crilly weeps over the loss of a sentimental horse blanket kept in his car for 20 years. He treasured the heirloom from horse days and would not trade it for money.
Corydon Corwin 53 of Promise City held for trial on drunken driving in a Aug. 5 two car collision near here that killed his wife, 24. A railroad pensioner, his man slaughter count was reduced to drunken driving at district court arraignment with court‑appointed attorney W. H. Miles. Corwin jailed in lieu of bond.

A crescent shaped hurricane with 100 mph winds moves northwestward toward the Atlantic and skirts the Bahamas, reducing danger to Florida. Chief Forecaster Grady Norton says if course stays, there is no danger to Florida. the storm center was located about 610 miles south by east of Miami.
Residents statewide vote on changing city council terms from two to four years and staggered terms begin. Even wards will elect four year terms in November, others two year terms. Future elections select three councilmen for four year terms. Polls open from 9am to 8pm at Court House City Hall Smart Implement Modern Appliance store.
In Springfield Missouri police hunted for more deadly cobras after five reptiles were killed and others possibly on the loose. The snakes were located within blocks of a pet shop owned by Reed Mowrer who denies any connection. Authorities feared additional snakes may remain at large.
The Public Health Service said the polio outbreak peak appears to be past with 2,150 new cases last week. Week of Aug 23 had 2,251 and Aug 30 had 2,238, with the peak thought reached in the week ended Aug 22. A 1952 peak occurred in the third week of September.
Chicago coroner Walter McCarron vowed to subpoena Mayor Martin Kennelly and top officials to a hearing after touring a seven story slum tenement housing up to 2,500 people. He warned about similar 10,000 more buildings and cited hazardous unsanitary conditions near a Labor Day fire scene.
Iowa Internal Revenue Bureau Chief Frank Halpin announced that no state wide tax sampling compilation has been made yet. Six agents in Des Moines are spot checking the county with no resistance reported and a few cases of inadequate returns found during sampling. Similar efforts are under way in Woodbury and Scott counties with two agents assigned.
Vernon Hudson appeared before Justice of the Peace Webster at Wellman on a bad check charge. He was arrested by the sheriff's office and given a $50 suspended fine.
West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer plans to give France 60 to 90 days to ratify the European Army and German peace pacts. If France stalls, Adenauer may push for a German national army and NATO admission while outlining final cabinet posts. He seeks to reassure neighbors he will not dominate Europe and, with Russia, pursue East German liberation only via negotiation.
A twin plum grown on a tree at Mrs. Minnie Chance's home is the latest addition to the journal's twins. A freak watermelon, ripened but the size of a small apple, is another notable contribution this season.
Mrs. Permetta R. Lay of the Iowa State Employment Service reminds public employees of the October 1 deadline to notify the Iowa Employment Security Commission about transferring prior pension contributions to the new supplemental system for prior service credit. Without notice no credit is given and contributions stay in the repeal fund. forms are available at the Employment Service over the Renner Food Store. Prior service benefits depend on years of public employment before July 1, 1953, times a percentage of the highest salary not exceeding 5000 for 12 months, with the result divided by 12 as the monthly benefit.
Howard Standefer, 25, of Alton Illinois, admitted robbing a nursery store and beating manager Harold Case 68 in Davenport. He was arrested in Rock Island and held for prosecution after a $60 to $66 robbery, bound and gagged the victim, and escaped with the money. A second robbery involved a Conoco filling station where a thin youth in a blue suit with a mask and stockings held up the attendant and took $60.
Public school buildings and grounds workers in Des Moines say they will strike on October 5 unless the school board recognizes their AFL unions in bargaining. About 200 of 280 custodians bus drivers yardmen and mechanics belong to Local 268B and Local 90 unions seeking wage and condition talks.
The initiation ceremony for HI Y members will be held this evening at 7 45 p m in the United Presbyterian church.
Dairy farmers and dairy operators from the area will meet at Hotel Brazelton in Mt Pleasant on Friday at 1 p m. The gathering aims to discuss problems facing dairymen and is sponsored by the Iowa State Dairy association with several Washington county representatives expected.
Washington county farmers are invited to join a farm management tour on Wednesday September 16. The tour starts at Gene Stephens farm near Ainsworth for soil management and a corn and cattle operation, then moves to George Horn farm six miles northeast of Washington to view a four year rotation plan and hog and poultry programs. Dean Huston of the Mississippi Valley Farm Business Association praises Horn’s labor efficiency. the event is sponsored by the extension service and the association.
In Panmunjom Korea the UN warns the Communists must free 3 404 prisoners or face consequences. Chinese Communist radio calls the list a fake. Indian guards begin processing anti Communist prisoners at Peace Village as tensions flare.
Washington reports new evidence that the United States plans a hydrogen bomb test. Both the U S and Russia have conducted hydrogen device tests with Nixon-like ambiguity on delivery capability. Tests may occur at Bikini Atoll with Joint Task Force Seven active since February, per defense directory disclosures.
Directors of the Washington County Swine Producers association will meet in Washington next Monday evening to plan the annual meeting. The program is expected to feature methods of producing the meat type hog.

Two drivers were reported in serious condition at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a collision east of Riverside on Highway 218 near the 218 and 33 junction shortly after noon. A car traveling west collided with a southbound semi truck. the truck caught fire and its driver, described as a Minnesota resident, was badly burned and rushed to hospital.
