Nightmare Fatal Fall At Storm Lake

Irven G Durkhart, 74, an old age pensioner, died after leaping from a second floor window of his rooming house while dreaming of jumping to a street car. He fell headfirst through a screen and sustained a broken hip and other injuries. A coroner's jury found the death accidental.

In Cedar Rapids a woman named Gladys Brenneman says on the way from Newhall to Cedar Rapids she lent her borrowed car to two men at a roadside cafe. Four miles from Newhall the men allegedly made advances. she slapped one, hid in a ditch, and was later picked up by another motorist.

Eugene Bartz eight years old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Bartz of Ainsworth was injured yesterday afternoon when struck by a car driven by M M George of Washington near the bridge east of Ainsworth on primary road The bumper struck him he sustained cuts on one ear back of head and left elbow His injuries were not serious and he received medical aid then was taken home

Last night in Washington cooled to 42 degrees the coldest of the season while Sunday reached 87 degrees with a 70 degree low. In northern Iowa frost was expected tonight with 35 to 40 degree lows and a statewide average temperature 15 degrees below normal after a 83 to 35 day.

Husbands Hobbies Cause Injuries To Wives In Cedar Rapids

Mrs. Melba Olson, 31, Newhall, and Mrs. Guy Miller, 34, Cedar Rapids, were hurt by their spouses hobbies. Olson suffered a fractured skull after standing near a golf swing. Miller had a fish hook embedded in her scalp while her husband cast.

Willkie Opposes Fish Amendment in Draft Debate

Presidential hopeful Wendell Willkie urged removal of the Fish amendment delaying conscription for 60 days to permit a voluntary enlistment push. He spoke after a conference of House and Senate conferees on the selective service bill. Representative Hamilton Fish criticized Willkie for supporting interventionist propaganda and said Willkie had not read the amendment.

Ginkens Case Set for Trial September 23

Marion Ginkens of Brighton pleaded not guilty in district court to rape charges filed by the county attorney. Judge Siegers appointed L. J. Kehoe as defense counsel and set the case for trial Monday September 23 at two o'clock. The September term grand jury was impaneled with T. W. Zillmer named foreman.

Murder suspect Raymond Slayer traced to New England

Police disclosed the man sought for the murder of Mrs. Maude Raymond of Washington Iowa is believed to have returned to New England with family roots there. An invalidSan Diego brother said Slayer is a Boston aristocrat by background and a college graduate. Circulars are sent nationwide as the manhunt centers in New England.
