Land preservation commission to meet in September

The Washington County Temporary Land Preservation Commission will meet Monday September 12 at 7 30 p m in the board of supervisors office at the Washington County Court House. Jim Frier says the group will begin preliminary work assembling information for planning public hearings and reports. Jim Elza of the East Central Regional Planning Commission will attend.

Brandon woman charged with arson at nursing home fires

Dianne Sue Brown, 22, of Brandon, Iowa, was charged in Buchanan County court with arson in connection with a series of fires at the Golden Age Care Center where she worked. She remained out of jail on a $2,000 bond.

Powell to address Iowa press group at 34th clinic

Jody Powell was scheduled to address the Iowa Daily Press Association's 34th annual clinic in Des Moines. More than 500 newspersons from Iowa were expected to hear Powell discuss the national political scene as the three day event opened with sessions on news, advertising and circulation for representatives of 39 newspapers.

The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald earned three top Iowa Daily Press Association honors including general excellence for newspapers over 12,000 circulation, community service for a Dubuque history presentation, and best of show in advertising. Bomb explodes at Frisco opera house

A terrorist bomb shattered a side entrance to San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House on the eve of opening night. No injuries were reported as police increased patrols and security was tightened for the performance. Man charged after Cedar Rapids shooting incident

Ricky E Gatewood, 27, faced three counts of assault with intent to commit murder after an alleged high powered rifle attack. One man was hospitalized in good condition for bullet fragments, two others injured by flying glass as police stopped the shooting from a garage at his southwest Cedar Rapids home. Gatewood was held on 300000 bond awaiting arraignment, with prior plans for admission to a psychiatric facility noted.
