Iowa Gov Ray lauds DOT move to halt phosgene railship

Des Moines Iowa Governor Robert D Ray said the U S Department of Transportation canceled all permits to ship phosgene gas by rail after his plea for safety. He noted seven trains with 105 cars were planned nationwide and two would pass Iowa. The Army will seek destruction or neutralization of remaining gas at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Ray urged stronger state rail safety rules and criticized funding limits for the Commerce Commission while stressing safety as a necessity.

Feed destroyed in Richland fire

Twenty six tons of commercial feed were destroyed by fire at the Fritchen Farm Feed Store on Highway 78 Richland. A round steel bin held about 6000 bushels of grain near other storage bins but no other losses occurred. Firemen manned the scene overnight and debris was hauled away. The fire started apparently by spontaneous combustion. Insurance coverage was not known.

Israel Attacks Egypt with Tanks Across Suez Front

Israeli tanks landed from assault craft along a 30 mile front south of the Suez Canal in the largest raid since 1967. Dozens of Egyptian casualties and heavy damage to radar stations were reported. One Israeli aircraft was shot down. one Israeli soldier wounded. The raid began Monday night with armored advances into Egyptian positions opposite the Gulf of Suez.

Dirksen Honored In Capitol Rotunda Funeral Lays In State

Everett Dirksen lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda as President Nixon eulogized him as a politician in the finest sense. Nixon praised Dirksen for shaping laws across four presidencies and his enduring influence on the nation. The solemn ceremony featured a wreath, a flag shrouded coffin, and a procession led by Vice President Agnew with Senate leaders guiding the tribute.
