Betsy Threatens Louisiana Coast In Fast Moving Hurricane
Hurricane Betsy barrelled through the Gulf heading for the Louisiana Texas coast with 140 mile per hour winds. Civil defense ordered Cameron Parish evacuations as residents raced to secure homes and prepare for a direct impact. The New Orleans Weather Bureau warned winds of 75 mph or more would hit the Gulf Coast by Friday sunrise, with the western Louisiana coast most likely to see the center move inland. Five dead reported in south Florida and extensive damage along Miami's Gold Coast as President Johnson dispatched a seven man team to assist relief efforts.

Washington Community school board meets with staffing and policy updates
The Washington Community School District board met Wednesday to review the opening of school and salary adjustments for bus drivers Al Helfrich, Lloyd Reighard, Earl Redlinger, Paul Hazelett, Gene Moran, and James Davison. New part time secretaries were approved for Brighton and the high school guidance department. Duane Hagensick was named assistant junior high football coach. Music equipment was purchased for the junior high. Supt. Phleger announced a $2497.44 NDEA check and proposed junior high guidance services. YMCA official Bob Gillesby requested gym use during renovations and the board set rental terms for the YWCA for the remodeling period.

Drug and loan racket uncovered at Anamosa State Reformatory
An imaging of an inmate ring alleged at Anamosa State Reformatory involving pills smuggled in and used as money to obtain cigarettes. A ringleader was transferred by action of the Iowa Board of Control. no charges filed. Loan scheme charged prisoners two cigarette packages per borrowed package. Warden Charles Howe called the transferred inmate too criminally sophisticated for the facility.

Rites at Junction for Wernimont infant
Graveside rites will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Columbus City Cemetery for Leon Edward Wernimont infant son of Larry and Anna Mae Asaro Wernimont. The infant was born Sept 7 in Mercy Hospital at Iowa City and died Sept 8. Gemini 5 astronauts hail near flawless launch
Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad described their eight day Gemini 5 flight as near perfect from launch on August 21 at Cape Kennedy. Cooper praised the Titan 2 vehicle while Conrad admitted more nerves at the press conference than during liftoff and said his heart rate ran higher on the ground than in space.
