Voters in What Cheer approved a 23509 bond issue to finance a school addition including gymnasium and auditorium for fifth to eighth grades. The margin was 451 to 170 with $20000 in federal aid assured.
Voters in the East Waterloo Independent School District approve a 150000 dollar bond to aid construction of a new elementary school. The measure passes 307 to 66. Project cost is estimated at 315000 dollars with a PWA grant of 141750 dollars approved to support the facility.
In appreciation to the State university for sponsoring the second annual short course this summer, the peace officers of the state have presented a trophy cup to the university. The short course has such success in its second year that it is planned to make it an annual event.
West Branch Iowa home of former President Hoover is being remodeled under Mrs. Hoover and Allan Hoover. The building has been moved back to its original site and interior and exterior are being redecorated.
Davenport reports Albert La Frenz 28 of Wilton Junction was among nine injured in a Walcott highway crash on August 23. A woman suffered skull and chest fractures and has been unconscious for 17 days but doctors remain hopeful for recovery.
Walter Winchell sparked controversy in Council Bluffs with remarks about a librarian, drawing sharp rebukes from Eva T. Canon, head of the local library. Canon accused Winchell of never visiting the library and of making uninformed comments about staff.
Iowa City health commissioner Dr Kk W Paulus said there is no evidence of transmission from horses to humans. He noted many horses in the county died from the disease this summer fueling public fear despite expert assurances.
Work to remove about 200 000 cubic yards of silt from the Iowa River bed will start soon under a WPA project. The material will be placed on old Town Field to raise street level and around the University Theater and new lagoons as part of the university river front beautification program.
Wendell Johnson of the University of Iowa presents that stuttering often results from efforts to stop the speech disorder. He notes stutterers repeat at similar places across readings and that over 60 percent of second readings repeat words that stuttered first. He says cues tied to prior stuttering trigger later repetitions.
Mrs. Rebeckah Eleanor Harrison Goble 85 died yesterday at her Ainsworth home after long illness. Funeral at 10 Saturday at the Goble residence with Rev Karl Megdelsen. burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Surviving children include W L Lefler, Clara Waggoner, Lizzie Farrell, George Goble, Grace Williams. 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Cy Dickinson of Brighton were here yesterday visiting friends and viewing local sights during their trip.
Columbus Junction hosts a Sept 15 ceremony to celebrate the No 2 highway paving finish in Louisa county with speeches by Iowa Highway Commission members Gov. Kraschel or representative, and other road advocates. A noon catfish and watermelon dinner follows.
The United Electrical Workers CIO plans to adjourn its third annual convention after voting a 25000 emergency fund to defend members in a Newton May tag strike court action. Seventeen members were convicted of contempt of court for violating a labor injunction, and other officials including James Carey face contempt charges before the Iowa Supreme Court with an appeal to the U S Supreme Court if needed.
Des Moines reports the national corn yield was cut but Iowa’s estimate remains unchanged from August. The Iowa crop is projected at 437,826,000 bushels, well above average yet 65,679,000 bushels below last year. The per acre yield is forecast at 4.0 bushels, versus 4.5 last year and 3.45 the year before.
The automobile races paused by rain on Labor Day will resume Monday at 2 30 PM at Kendrick field. Two races are planned a consolation heat for cars that did not finish top two in the preliminaries and the final featuring top finishers. Admission is free for Labor Day program attendees.
A skunk crossing Highway 16 near Waverly caused a two car collision 14 miles east of Waverly. Driver No 1 halted for the animal, EK Shipp of Tripoli followed, and Lester Wilson of Independence struck Shipp from behind. Shipp’s car repair costs were about $200, Wilson’s bumper was damaged. The skunk was not hurt.
G R Genkinger and Mrs Herman Wallace departed last night for Allerton to spend a few days with relatives.
City Solicitor Henry B Bailey and County Attorney Richard A Stewart return from Omaha where regional PWA officials endorse a plan of procedure for Washington cemetery road. Joint city county sponsorship continues with two contracts. If Washington office approves, go ahead signal is expected soon.
Attorney General James Mitchell said Richard Ringler of Brooklyn confessed involvement in both the Hedrick and North English bank robberies. Ringler’s account differs from that of Louis Burry of Brooklyn regarding the Hedrick robbery and a woman named Mrs Norma McDonald, Victor.
A Massman Construction crane stands at the North Second Avenue railway crossings where workers begin on the underpass project. The crane and its machinery haul away large amounts of dirt and relocate it as construction proceeds.
A farm woman and two children were with Barry’s account while her husband William McDonald allegedly accompanied them as the couple argued over details. Mitchell said the McDonalds, arrested in Chicago, may waive extradition to Iowa for prosecution or face federal charges before state transfer.

William Vesely was arrested by Sheriff H. M. Putnam on a drunken driving charge after a collision south of Riverside that injured five people in the other car. He was held to district court in $1,000 bond after admitting guilt at a justice court hearing. Vesely resides between Riverside and Ainsworth.
Mrs. Frank Easley of Paton Iowa aged 38 welcomed two 2 day old daughters the second pair of twins born to her by Caesarian operation Medical authorities said the operation may be unique two consecutive sets of twins from the same mother The first twin boys born two years ago remain well The new twins weigh nearly seven pounds each and the family also has a 15 year old son.
Yesterday's maximum temperature reached 95 degrees in Washington, one degree lower than the previous day. Last night's minimum fell to 68 degrees as temperatures cooled.
Funeral services were held yesterday at the R. H. Stewart home near Ainsworth for Ray Townsend with Rev. Earl Meglerson presiding. Music was by a quartet of McConnell Sands Thoma and Wallace. Pallbearers included Jenkins Whiteman White Pressley Keiper and Reaney. Burial was in Ainsworth Cemetery.

New Pease Motor Company adds Ed Hyneik as a new force member. Hyneik is an experienced mechanic and welder with fourteen years in auto repair. He and wife Mrs. Hyneik, formerly Sylvia Musil of Washington, moved from Chicago and reside at 721 West Madison Street.
