Federal grand jury charged L. H. Rockwell assistant city engineer and Charles Campbell WPA timekeeper with using WPA labor and stock for private work at Cora B. Matheson Rockwell home in Council Bluffs. Less than 100 dollars involved with a maximum penalty of 2000 dollar fine and one year in jail. Rockwell did not own the property.
In Davenport a National Tea Co. store manager Bruce Lease was robbed of 23 dollars by a bandit who prodded him with a gun and bound him in the basement with tape. In Grundy Center Reg Hawn, a Marshalltown mechanic, pleaded guilty to failing to report an auto accident and drew nine months in jail after his car struck and killed Dode Cahn in Waterloo last March.
In Humboldt the Republican campaign opening drowned out by water from an open faucet. T. S. Herrick, who rents above the Humboldt Trust and Savings Bank, heard the national committee address through the sound system, fled to the street, and left the faucet running, causing water to flood his room and the bank below.
Miss Louise Bos trom of Vinton was crowned Sweet Corn Queen at the annual geweet corn day festival here.
Sheriff Fred Nesper says eleven auto crash deaths already this year on Muscatine county roads set a record. The count marks a deadly year for the county with ongoing highway risks and safety concerns.
Iowa City University of Iowa alumni urged a band to compete in the Big Ten. Prof Rufus Fitsgerald announced the purchase of new uniforms for a 100 piece band and a $5009 purchase of new instruments. The band is placed under the school of fine arts.
Marshalltown reports five year old Bobby Eckler swallowed part of a whistle during play. The whistle lodged in his throat causing an eerie whistle with every exhale until doctors used an esophagoscope to remove it after a short procedure.
Freshmen registration at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls exceeded that year’s total by 24 students, reaching a freshman enrollment of 1,050. This marks the largest class at the college in several years.
Tama Indians seek removal of farm administrator Thomas Scott after ta ma reservation superintendent Dr Ira Nelson dismissed their complaint as invalid The movement aims to oust Scott who the group believes mishandled farm affairs and prompted a tribal vote to remove him.
A burglar smashed a plate glass window at the Jansen jewelry store in Davenport and fled with watches valued at $900. Police hold two suspects as the investigation continues.
Mrs Billie Hanson announces the opening of dancing classes with registration this week. She trained four years with Miss Edna Lucille Baum in Chicago and will teach folk and tap styles. Registration at 120 Clara Barton Street this week.
Plans for fall activity dominated last night’s Y’s Men’s club dinner. President Ted Brown reported on the Washington club’s recent International convention at Silver Bay New York and announced detailed reports will be given September 22 by delegates from Iowa and Illinois clubs. The club received an International trophy, a regional Loving Cup, awarded to Washington and kept by the Midwest region. Committees for Boy Scout work and amateur night were named or discussed and a drive to sell 500 season football tickets was outlined with ward-based contests to decide who buys a dinner for the opposing team.
Mrs. Hanson reported today that a large number are expected to enroll, reflecting strong interest. She is the wife of the manager of The Hanson Company, successors to H I Ward and Co.

Montpelier Vermont Republican primary results show Lt Gov George D Alkem a 44 year old farmer winning overwhelmingly over Col H Nelson Jackson a Burlington banker and newspaper man in yesterday's contest.
George Norris, veteran U S senator and former Republican, filed as an independent candidate after a petition bearing 40 000 signatures was presented in Lincoln Nebraska. Norris had previously declined to run.
The Fourth ward canvassing committee for Washington high school and junior college football season tickets led early this morning. Mike Logan reported nine tickets sold by noon. Purchasers include Fred Reid, Harry Ramseyer, Klein Klo thing Kompany, Peter's Hardware, Eveready Plumbing, and others in the Fourth Third and First wards among Y's Men's members.
Announcement of a regional tuberculosis seal sale conference to be held in Washington on September 23 under Iowa Tuberculosis Association auspices. The event aims to organize a countywide sale of Christmas health seals to fund local health unit operations. Participants from Johnson to Lee counties will gather, with talks by Dr. R M Sorensen and Dr C A Boice and a full program on publicity and sale techniques.
Secretary Clarence Logan said Washington stores will close Thursday during the funeral of Winfield Smouse a longtime local businessman who died yesterday. Funeral services are set for four o clock at the Presbyterian church. Leigh Soule of the Y M C A said the Y building will also be closed during the funeral. Smouse served on the Y M C A board since its founding and helped fund and support the building and its operations.
Edward Earl Morgan aged 44, Rock Island section boss, died after a brief illness at work. He collapsed at the Ainsworth passenger station, heart disease given as cause. Funeral Friday at 10:30 at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. Vernon Carter. burial in Brighton cemetery. Born April 14, 1892 at Verdi, he married Ethel Shaffer in 1914, widowed 1922, remarried 1932 to Ethel Hesselline. Surviving: wife, children Francis Crone, Dale Earl, Roy Glider, Nina, Robert Lee, Frances and Francine, two stepchildren, two grandchildren, mother Mrs. Thomas Morgan, and several siblings.
Republicans of Washington County will hold an organization meeting at the court house in Washington at 8:00 p m Thursday September 17. L M Eicher is county chairman and will announce plans for an intensive county wide campaign. Former State Senator M B Pitt of Logan Iowa will speak, noted for Republican national committee organization work.
Clifford Ayers Wesley Buterbaugh and Walter Woods of Wellman are serving thirty day sentences in the county jail for intoxication after pleading guilty before Mayor E C Jones in Wellman.
Mrs. Ed Warren and her two children Nickle and Barbara return home to Harper after spending the summer in Colorado. Mrs Warren’s mother Mrs Barbour, who had stayed with the George Clapper family, has returned to Harper.

At the Nuremberg congress Nazi leaders led by Adolf Wagner rallied the crowd to back Adolf Hitler’s bid to reclaim former colonies. Nobuzama Tsumura, 29, and Miss Touye Yanari, 22, from near Plattesville Colorado, were seized in Davenport for attempting to take pictures of the Rock Island government arsenal. The man claimed he photographed a river boat. If the negative lacks arsenal photos, he will be released. He had 389 dollars and claimed wealthy Japanese parentage and a University of Colorado education. Federal law bans arsenal photography without authorization.
Supt BE A Ralston reports total Washington public school enrollment has risen to 1281 from 1245 on opening day. Since Monday 36 pupils have entered, with elementary at 501, junior high 238, high school 470, and junior college 77, up two from day one.
Raymond Hayes appeared before Justice of Peace J E B Bovee then was held for district court on a charge of driving an automobile while intoxicated. Bond set at $500. Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey arrested him. The incident occurred in Riverside.
