The Washington County Flower Show closed at eight last night after drawing more than 300 visitors. County residents from Wellman Keota Crawfordsville Kalona and Ainsworth attended as the Garden Club plans a larger event next spring with revised classifications and ribbon awards.
Mrs John Woods a well known figure in the community died early today at 8 15 am in Colorado Springs Colorado The death was sudden with no explanation given in the telegram The body will arrive Saturday evening at 6 00 on the Rock Island The funeral will be at Jones Funeral Home Mrs Woods left Washington about a year ago and had been staying in Colorado Springs she planned to return to Washington soon
William Holland intends to travel to Ceday Falls within the next few days to enter Iowa State Teachers College at Ceday Falls.
Fairfield Indiana officials asked the state board of health to open an investigation into a typhoid outbreak after a third death. The board declined citing limited powers and suggested appealing to Dr. A E Harvey of the University of Iowa. Eight serious cases and measures on water and sewer systems were noted.
The teaching force in Washington schools is nearly complete with the addition of George Leebl manual training instructor at the Junior High who began yesterday. James Bambrick and Prof. W F Bickel cover for him amid minor injuries. Miss Elsie Glassburner recuperates from appendectomy. Mrs. R H McCleery substitutes. Most schools appear full, schedules set for music penmanship drawing and physical training, and tours begin as county oversight resumes.
Clifford and Glenn Thompson left this morning in their car for Kansas to visit relatives for a few weeks and plan to travel farther west before returning home. Mr and Mrs Vernon Jackson and three children of Moline formerly of this county visited a few days at the home of Mrs Jacksons sister Mrs Harold Hayes and other relatives and friends. Mrs Jackson is remembered as Leslie Noe of Highland township.
William S. Brock and Edward F. Schlee arrived in Hongkong from Hanoi aboard the Pride of Detroit setting a world record after 14 days of flying. They covered about 9550 miles of a 67067 mile itinerary and planned onward legs to Shanghai Tokio and beyond toward Midway Honolulu and San Francisco.
A six wheeled frame house was moved from east Washington street to Emmett Hayes' Dairy farm on West Monroe street. The slow cautious lift and tight corners drew crowds, pausing four blocks to avoid square traffic, while local business people watched. Hayes plans to use the structure as a dairy barn after remodeling.
Word came this morning of the sudden death of Mr. Charles Bonnett of Davis City Iowa, father of Misses Frankie and Vesper Bonnett of the city. Frank and Bonnie Bonnett learned of the news as they prepared to travel. He was a longtime farmer and respected in the community, leaving a widow and two daughters.
Miss Edna McCarty left last evening for Kalamazoo Michigan where she has accepted a stenographer job. She had been employed in Elgin Illinois for several years. Miss Bonnie Bennett left this morning for Davis City Iowa after her father died suddenly. Miss Frankie Bennett plans to go to Davis City this evening.
Iowa State College will send its 50 member concert band on a three day Milwaukee trip with the football team to play Marquette on Thanksgiving day. Special busses will be chartered for the excursion with the band limited to 50. The campus will field three bands this fall with about 80 80 and 100 members respectively.
Deputy warden Gene Breitenbach provides updated state game laws to readers. The notice covers squirrel, duck, goose, snipe, and furbearer seasons with dates and zones, plus new pheasant shooting rules in northern Iowa counties and county petition requirements.
Letter argues a curbside mailbox would ease mail deposits for drivers, citing other towns and patron convenience. No official action or decision is noted.
In Chicago both camps report mishaps as Dempsey and Tunney near the planned September rematch. Tunney heals from an eye knock by Chuck Wiggins while Dempsey endures a nose injury to Norman Link. The third and final day of the Washington Baptist Association convention at Prairie Flower church northwest of Washington draws many Washington couples to tonight’s session. Rev. Hugh F. Moore of Des Moines, Frank Anderson, and Rev. Victor N. Witter are among speakers. Rev. Arthur A. Vinz addressed the group in July. A detailed report appears tomorrow in The Journal.
Des Moines reports severe rainfall along the eastern border of Iowa as a cloudburst in Clinton dumps eight inches of rain at 4:15 PM and floods cellars while damaging paving and delaying traffic. Dubuque and Davenport also record heavy showers. Mill Creek railroad tracks damaged, four hours of eastbound delay. Livestock on low lands moved to higher ground.
The wedding of Mrs. Myrtle Crawford of Burlington to Emil Kellerhals of this place occurred Wednesday August 31 at Burlington. The couple spent several days with the groom’s daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Garrick, before going to house.
Shenandoah Iowa September 9 cockle burrs are cited by J L Gwynn a corn grower and weather prophet as proof there will be no early frost. He claims burrs bloom only in time to avoid frost and predicts frost will be later than usual after seeing burrs begin blooming last week.
Des Moines Iowa will award contracts Sept 20 for 70.04 miles of paving the largest single effort in state history. The project includes 17.94 miles surfacing in O Brien county and bids for 0.39 miles in Benton 12.665 miles in Keokuk 0.04 miles in Cedar Scott and Muscatine counties plus grading in Harrison Tama and Sioux and graveling in Poweshiek and Warren counties.
Sincere congratulations go with Donald Anderson and his fiancée Viola McMinn of Mason City as weekend guests at the home of the former’s mother, Mrs. C. V. Lucas. Visitors include Jow Beardsley of Detroit and his companion Miss Kenutson of Des Moines at the Pied Beardsley home. George and Mrs. Shaner motor to Letts to visit friends and spent Sunday musicking. Lydia Miller and daughter of Waterloo visited at the Garrick home with J. B. Miller family. Lew Lechner traveled to Brighton and returned Sunday with relatives. Robert Trellis and sons of Keokuk spent the weekend at J. Shepherd’s home. Joe Miller and daughter Heele shopped in Washington Saturday. Myrtle Abrahamson left Sunday for Los Angeles after several weeks with the Abrahamson family. Helen Ostberg left for Phoenix to seek health improvement.
Coroner L A Jones probes death of Herman Ritz 47 Kalona after he rose from dinner at 12 45 pm and drank carbolic acid in presence of his wife. No health issue beyond recent operation noted. Ritz formerly Kalona marshal survived by wife, a brother and father in Waterloo Iowa.
Miss Marjorie Schulty of Chicago visiting here with her mother Mia Schulty. Chick Oldham sent a box of fancy grapes to Walter Barnett, who helped the Journal force. The Rouse family leaves for Washington Po,s after visiting relatives. Mrs J D Glasgow of Waterloo Iowa visits friends this week. Kelsey and Kings plan Iowa City visit tonight. Mrs EK Fisher and daughters Alice Evelyn Hazel and Kenneth Potts from Eldon were guests at G W Trott’s home yesterday. Harold Reynolds and Ernest Marshall plan Cedar Falls trip for Iowa State Teachers College. Lloyd Foster announces the arrival of a son, Robert Scott, weighing seven and a half pounds. Mrs Richard Gaines returns to Fairfield after visiting here. Fred Jones from Fairfield takes a short vacation here.
