A United Press tally shows 585 fatalities from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday over Labor Day weekend, with 394 in traffic. Michigan led with 21 traffic deaths, while Illinois and Indiana posted 15 each. A Chicago fire killed at least 18 in a Negro slum tenement, with 10 more feared trapped, and seven women died at Plant City Florida when a Seaboard train struck their car.
Senator McCarthy vowed to push Army employment names to President Eisenhower if Treasury officials refuse. He pressed Maj. Gen. The 22000 member carpenters union reaffiliated with the American Federation of Labor ending a month long revolt that withdrew during a Chicago executive council meeting. AFL President George Meany and Maurice Hutcheson pledged a program to prevent raids as the council drafts policy for the St. Louis convention.

Bonn AP reports Chancellor Konrad Adenauer won a sweeping election victory and will tighten CDU control in the West German government. The win fuels plans to reunite East and West Germany and rearm with Western allies. A key decision awaits on whether Adenauer serves as foreign minister or designates a successor. He swept Communists from the new Bundestag, removing 15 seats from the outgoing Parliament.
