Des Moines, Sept. 8. Governor George A. Wilson of Iowa defies Roosevelt by declaring Thursday November 30 as Thanksgiving Day in the state. He notes Lincoln established a definite date and opposes commercial aspects intruding on the day’s religious solemnity.
Lacey Dempsey and Marjorie Schultz of Chicago are spending two weeks touring Los Angeles and San Francisco. Dempsey is on a two week vacation from her job at the National Bank of Washington.
A Milwaukee passenger train traveling from Chicago to Omaha derailed after crashing into two moving freight cars east of Marion Iowa. At least twenty people received first aid and others were hospitalized in Cedar Rapids as seven cars left the track. The locomotive plowed into the freight cars and the wreck involved about 500 yards of track. an ambulance attendant was burned while aiding the engineer.
President Roosevelt proclaimed a state of limited national emergency to strengthen neutrality and national defense during peacetime. He will issue executive orders expanding army manpower and naval personnel while enabling broader powers to combat propaganda and subversive activity.
Kellogg residents vote 148 against and 10 in favor in a special election to renew a 25 year electric light and power franchise held by the Iowa Southern Utilities Co. The current franchise ends October 1.
Charles City reports William Pruessner, a naturalized American, was detained in Germany after leaving for visits to relatives in June. Relatives say they last heard from him about two weeks ago as war outbreaks constrain travel and communication.
A mob claiming Legion membership disrupted a Communist party meeting at the Des Moines city library auditorium. No injuries reported. Police arrived but took no action as Forrest Spaulding the city librarian urged leaders to let the speaker continue.
Council Bluff reports the Pottawattamie County Historical Society receiving a $100 donation in ten $10 bills in a mailed letter postmarked Oakland. No sender identification or return address was included. Society president Henry K. Peterson suspects a contribution but fears a possible error and offers to return if needed.
Des Moines report quotes Dr. Thomas Parran surgeon general saying the United States is better prepared for wartime epidemics than in 1918. He notes knowledge of influenza has improved but no control method is perfected and Iowa will receive about $30 000 in federal funds for public health work with roughly half for public health service.
An end car struck a rail stub and derailed, buckling the track and fouling the main line. Officials began an investigation to determine why the freight cars moved and caused the incident.
About 600 teachers from Washington Henry and Keokuk counties attend the tri county teachers institute at the Washington high school. Registration neared full in Washington and Henry. 250 Keokuk teachers enrolled. Mount Pleasant teachers missed opening sessions.
Mr and Mrs C H Johnson and Mable Larson of Swedesburg were callers here this day as residents noted the social visit.
Washington county Legion unit will meet Monday night September 11 at the Legion home in Crawfordsville under the new county commander Warren Morgan of Brighton. The six posts form the county unit with bi monthly meetings and joint gatherings three times a year to share activities and socialize with guests and visiting officers. Detailing the roster, district officers Fred Downing and Maynard Hill Brown along with A E B Baldrige stand among the key participants. The organizers urge a large turnout to welcome the new officers.
William Egley aged 74 died at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Rh J Sanher after a stroke earlier this week He was born December 14 1804 at Warsaw IL and lived in the area most of his life He leaves a widow a son Harry Egley of Warsaw a daughter Mrs Tanner nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at Warsaw with burial there at the L A Jones funeral home and Warsaw the place of services
Corydon congressman Karl M. Le Compte told the Pioneer pageant that American boys would protect their country but should not be sent overseas. He predicted President Roosevelt would call a special session of Congress to revise neutrality law.
Berlin reports German mechanized units entered Warsaw after a week of fighting. News claimed the fall of Poland's capital and the capture of Sandomierz, with German advances threatening Poland’s retreat toward Romania. Germany fights on three fronts as British and French actions continue at sea and on land.
The official thermometer read 82 degrees at noon in Washington, down from 95 yesterday. The previous day topped 100, the hottest so far this year, and 99 last Sunday. Today’s high may stay near 90 or below, with uncertainty about reaching that figure.
Milo F Sorden guest directs a massed Van Buren county band at Keosauqua fair amid return honor after last year’s success. Leaders from Keosauqua Bonaparte and Stockport selected top players for the united band to perform this evening. Sorden, Washington Municipal band director, premier band leader in the region, also runs Sorden Music Shop and Conn equipment HQ.
In the first seven days of September thirteen new cars and trucks were licensed in Washington county, signaling a local auto business pickup. Total licensed vehicles show 5 505 cars and 760 trucks with 1959 plates, compared with 5 307 cars and 705 trucks a year earlier. Francis Johnson president of the Iowa Farm Bureau federation invites farm and city people to the first annual Iowa Farm Sports Festival at Iowa State college in Ames. Rural athletes from sixty counties will compete Friday and Saturday with no admission charged.
