Members of the State Spiritualist Association of Iowa will hold their annual convention at Hotel Chamberlain Des Moines with the Second and Third spiritualist churches hosting. Public addresses and dramatic demonstrations will be given this evening and Sunday afternoon.
Nominations now invited for Miss Washington and eight princesses to reign during Americas On Parade at the Washington Festicorn October 1 to 3. Ballots, free vote coupons, and ticket sales form the voting methods with daily tabulations and various vote bonuses.
Mrs Helen Huntington Astor wins a divorce from Vincent Astor on charges of mental cruelty after a 20 minute Cody Wyoming hearing. The Astors married in April 1914 and were noted as members of the Astor family.
Wide eyed 18 month old Sidney Goldstein returned to regular diet after swallowing a one and a half inch bolt. His parents rushed him to Iowa Lutheran hospital where doctors removed the bolt on Thursday and he was back home by Friday.
More than 7,000 Iowans received reminders that their federal income tax installment payments are due September 15. H. W. Dale of the Federal Income Tax Division stated that failure to pay by this date will trigger loss of the installment plan and require immediate payment of the full remaining tax plus 6 percent interest from September 18 until payment.
Frank Conner, 31, a farmer, died in a truck accident when he stepped onto the running board to reach a rear article. The truck left the road and Conner was crushed by rear wheels as he attempted to regain control.
Cen terville former mayor Ww. R. Blakeslee pleaded not guilty in district court to embezzlement and was released on a 1000 dollar bond. The charge alleges he withheld 248 dollars in fines during his tenure as mayor.
Democratic candidate John K. Valentine launches a campaign schedule visiting all nine Iowa counties. He plans a Keokuk luncheon, a Port Madison dinner, and an evening address at West Point. Sunday's work includes a Rice Lake picnic near Worth and Winnebago counties.
Ross Hardman of Des Moines faces 10 months left of a 10 year term and asks to be returned to the state reformatory at Anamosa to endure a hard winter. He told Detectives Cavender and Fitzpatrick he preferred prison food and asked them to arrange return. He said he had better meals in prison than since his release.
Nile Kinnick, Iowa’s All-American halfback last season, accepts a 10 month coaching and public relations post at the University of Iowa. He will likely work with the freshman football staff while pursuing law studies.
Mayor Lytle grants Festhorn Commission permission to hold all pageant rehearsals in City Hall. Rehearsals start Monday evening and are open to the public. Mrs. A. EF Baldrige and Mrs. Frances Cherry announce the America on Parade cast is being assembled with sponsors acting as scouts including Mrs. B&B F. Bostwick J. H. Baird W. B. Bond Rev. R. C. Chairman Carl W Klein of the Washington Festicron commission appeals for 24 volunteers to complete 24 county maps for the Iowa mosaic made from corn kernels. With 75 maps finished or nearly done, start early next week to finish in time. Volunteers receive instructions at 16 South Avenue B and will handle one county each under Norma Payne's assistance.
President Roosevelt returns to Hyde Park amid a major dispute among the new dealers and labor unions over the renewal of J Warren Madden as NLRB chairman. Madden’s five year term expired and the decision to reappoint or release him pits the AFL against the CIO and involves Dr Harry Millis of Chicago on the board’s staff.
Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey arrested Lyle E. Hyatt yesterday evening at Aledo Illinois upon Mercer county sheriff request. Hyatt passed a small bogus check at a local lunch room but later made good before transfer to Illinois authorities.
The Payne family finished a detailed county map for Clark County while other groups completed maps for Jefferson Montgomery and Montgomery counties led by Mrs. Frances Cherry and Miss Ticia Patton.
Evangelist C L Vories at the Voice of Prophecy auditorium announces a Sunday night talk on The Unpardonable Sin as part of a schedule change. The free Bible school continues Saturdays at 2 00 pm with a preaching service at 3 90 pm and Sunday lectures at 7 45 pm. All are invited.
Fifteen hundred safety gas balloons will rise from Washington’s business district at 3 p.m. Saturday September 14 for a race open to eighth graders or younger. Prizes include 20 dollars for the farthest balloon, ten 1 prizes of 1 each, and banners for the Festicorn celebration promotion. Balloons come with prepaid return cards and entry cards are mailed to every school.
The audience at the State theater last night saw an Iowa news reel about the Tall Corn Award event. Don Radda of Oskaloosa won the $75 cash prize awarded by Gov. George A. Wilson on August 22. Jesse Radda, Cedar Township farmer, received second prize. Mrs Keith Adams and her son Jimmy from Wellman visited yesterday.
Frank B. Miller broadcasts that about 60 individuals and firms have donated 20 dollars each toward the airport project. The total represents two thirds of the needed fund with the final third hard to raise. Volunteers are urged to join by next Tuesday, September 10, as town meetings and out of town contributors shape the drive.

Washington sept 7 Chairman Andrew J May of the house military affairs committee said he will demand a roll call vote on the Fish amendment to the conscription bill. The amendment provides a 60 day volunteer enlistment trial before the draft law takes effect and was passed 185 to 155. If 400000 volunteers are not found Roosevelt would call men 21 to 45 into the draft, while 18 to 35 would be eligible for volunteering.
Eight year old Kermit Farrier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Farrier, sustained a severe right arm injury when his swinging arm struck a car door as he walked home from Walnut school southwest of Washington. The flesh was torn above and below the elbow. he was taken home by the driver and then to the county hospital. Witnesses believed the accident unavoidable for the car’s driver Lewis Goodlander, who was driving not more than ten miles an hour.
Ray Murphy, a former New York insurance commissioner and Democrat, denounces government agents in Des Moines accusing them of suppressing the public good. He contends authorities target business interests and misrepresent policy actions.
Reports from Berlin describe a three hour morning bombardment by British air forces using parachute flares to illuminate targets. Fires started across the city including a large warehouse, a stable near Unter den Linden, and municipal buildings in northeastern Berlin.
