An official Iowa audit shows net operating costs for 15 board of control institutions fell 21 percent over three years. Operating costs declined from 4,377,850 in 1931 to 3,833,055 in 1934 while inmate population rose from 13,399 to 14,974.
Burlington railroad officials announce a 3600 horsepower diesel oil burning locomotive will cross Iowa on September 13 for a test run from Chicago to Denver. If the test succeeds the railroad may purchase several engines of this type.
Interest paid by Iowa banks on public deposits to the state sinking fund fell to 45 543.85 for July from 49 344.87 in June, the second month under the new 1 percent rate, records in State Treasurer Wegman’s office show.
Iowa City dean of engineering Clement C Williams of the University of Iowa was elected president of Lehigh University. He will succeed Charles Russ Richards who resigned for health reasons. Williams, 53, will assume the presidency Oct 1.
Andy of Amos and Andy, blackface radio favorites, will visit Valley Junction and Des Moines. The pair includes C. J. Correll and his wife, a niece of Mrs. C. D. Ohler. The wife is a former No girl. An airline venture followed but limited air hours require a second pilot for the Chicago to Des Moines leg.
Sioux City officials vow to resist a state two percent sales tax on waterworks receipts after city water bills are reported to be largely uncollectible. Superintendent Phil Carlin informed the council of the revenue issue guiding the stance.
DES MOINES The body of BE. J. Whitehouse 79 once wealthy resident of Des Moines and London England was disinterred for an autopsy by Coroner William Carpenter. Whitehouse died June 20 his son James E Whithouse requested the autopsy to determine the cause. Attorneys report the elder Whitehouse estate exceeded $100000.
Ray Archibald, 24, of Marion, was critically injured at the Quaker Oats Co plant when a fellow worker turned a compressed air hose on him to blow dust from his clothes. Doctors report a ruptured colon as the result of the incident.
Washington county medical men and their wives plan a turkey dinner on September 24 at the Wellman Methodist church. Mrs. Henry Durian chairs the Ladies Aid as the event includes doctors from the county and other state medical men invited by Dr. Arthur Steindler of the University of Iowa hospitals.
Miami authorities cremated hurricane victims in the Florida keys and buried bodies brought to Miami to prevent pestilence. A national memorial service was planned at Bay Front Park with federal representation as Red Cross tallies rose to about 446 dead.
Mrs. Gertie Hollen, 85, widow of a Civil War soldier, died about six this morning at 421 South Eighth Avenue where she lived. She had long been in failing health and had lived in Washington after moving from the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown. She was sister to the late Lewis Wallace, a known Washington Civil War veteran. Funeral services will be held at 10 30 Sunday morning at the L A Jones funeral home with Rev. W F Ogleton of the A M E church officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.
The local P. T. A. with the P. WW A city council purchases a 16 millimeter moving picture projector. Melvin Gingerich oversees operations. it travels between ward and St. James schools. Films come from the state extension services and Iowa State College.
Iowa state liquor stores reported August 1935 sales at 445,752.68 dollars, up 39.6 percent from July totals of 319,301.23 with eight new stores. Des Moines No 1 led gains at 11,859 dollars followed by Waterloo 8,401 and Cedar Rapids 4,750 while Mc Gregor, Sheldon and Hawarden posted losses.
Germany will lodge a diplomatic protest with Washington and New York over Magistrate Louis Brodsky's dismissal of charges against five men involved in the riot on the liner Bremen. Berlin editors criticized the verdict and compared the Nazi banner to piracy.
Geneva reports the League of Nations sub committee appeals to Ethiopia and Italy to refrain from hostile actions while peace efforts continue. In the first half of 1935 fourteen new bread factories started operation. The largest among them produce up to 120 tons of bread daily and are located in Sverdlovsk and Vladivostok.
In Bursh Creek Oregon a tiny spider aboard Orvaal Elliott’s car distracted him as he brushed it away. He veered off the road and plummeted into a ditch, narrowly avoiding serious harm.
Iowa Republican leaders announce a statewide rally September 27 at the Iowa state fairgrounds Des Moines with speaker Theodore Christianson former Minnesota governor and congressman. The event focuses on farm policy and party unity as editors pledge cooperation and no farm program will be drafted at the meeting.

Frank Pringle received a telegram from his brother H H Pringle of Erskine Alberta reporting that Charles Pringle has died today. The body will be brought to Keota for burial with funeral arrangements not yet set.
Tentative program announced for the district Christian Endeavor convention to be held in Washington on September 14 and 15. The event expects at least 150 attendees with a packed schedule of services, conferences, music, Bible contests, and awards across the Presbyterian and Church of Christ venues.

Iowa filed 311 PWA applications totaling an estimated 29.49 million dollars for grade crossing eliminations and road construction.
