Integration Tension Builds at Van Buren High School Arkansas
In Van Buren Arkansas school officials and police brace for a week of tension at the 650 pupil high school as white students stage anti integration protests. Gov. Faubus says he has no plan for Van Buren or to sign anti integration bills, observers report little trouble. A group of 50 white students continued the strike against integration Friday keeping Negroes out of the high and junior high schools. CORPUS CHRISTI TEX. Tropical storm Ella ended its threat to become a hurricane when it weakened between 30 and 100 miles from the Gulf Coast city. Hundreds evacuated, but many returned as rain fell across the area. Weather officials warned of up to five inches locally with possible floods in central Texas. Roadways flooded and Coast Guard advised against gulf ventures while winds dropped to around 30 mph north of the city.
