White to Maryland Going into Business

Kenneth White longtime associate of the L. A. Jones funeral home since 1934 plans to leave Sept 15 and start his own funeral directing business in Cumberland Maryland. He has leased a Cumberland funeral home, will install equipment, and hopes to be established by mid October. Parade Formation For Washington Exposition On West Second

Parade forms next Tuesday and Thursday on West Second Street in Washington. Entries line up on side streets feeding West Second with color guard and bands at St James church. Floats and cars will be judged after the Thursday lineup on West Jefferson Street to close the day.

Truman pledges U S support for UN at Rio address

President Truman told a joint Brazilian congress that the United States will back the United Nations with all resources but cautioned that steadfast purpose, toil, and patience are needed. He urged hemispheric unity, promised aid to war-devastated nations, and emphasized enduring cooperation between Brazil and the United States to advance world peace and law.

Box Lunch to Open by Mr and Mrs Box in New Café

Mr and Mrs Ray Box plan a new Box Lunch in the former Arlyce Studio building. The opening Saturday offers free coffee and doughnuts to patrons. The menu includes sandwiches soups salads fries cold drinks and ice cream. Previously they ran Maid-Rite and Congress notes and cafe.

Children Themed Exposition Program Promoted Friday

Friday September 12 features a personal participation day with a 10 am children’s pet parade and an 11 am baby beauty contest at the square bandstand. Four baby divisions, a Freckles contest, and 3 pm children’s games with prizes are announced, with entries due by noon Friday.

An amateur contest will be held at 4 o clock in the afternoon on Friday with prizes for the most talented in the county. Two classes are offered for children up to 14 and adults 15 to 100. Community members are urged to contact the Washington County Exhibition office by writing to Box 250 with name and address.

Children up to 14 may enter four divisions on Friday September 12 at 10 00 A M on the square. Prizes and refreshments follow the parade with 3 00 P M activities including sack races tug of war and a freckles and pie eating contests. Railroads Seek 27 Percent Freight Rate Increase

The Association of American Railroads asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for a 27 percent rise in freight rates to cover a 15.5 cent hourly wage boost for non operating workers and other cost jumps. The proposal would lift annual railroad revenue by about 1.873 billion dollars, with hearings starting Tuesday and an immediate temporary 10 percent rise sought, except for coal coke and iron ore.

Car Collision Near Keota Causes Minor Damage

A vehicle owned by Walter Bennettt and driven by his wife collided with a car driven by Daniel J. Oseveiler three miles north of Keota on a county road yesterday. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at about $200.

Mrs Josephine Griffith 69 wife of Edwin Griffith died at her Burlington home last night after years of declining health She lived in Washington the past four decades and was active in the WSCS and Sunday school Funeral services are set for Saturday at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Fred E Miller officiating Burial will be Elm Grove cemetery She is survived by her husband, four daughters, one son, two brothers, two sisters, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren Records show several relatives predeceased.
