Cuban upheaval takes power as four US warships arrive for safety. Cabinet members of President Carlos de Cespedes plan resignations while enlisted soldiers and radical elements form a provisional government. Ramon Grau heads a five man executive commission awaiting continuity.
An all county Wheat Growers meeting will be held at city hall at 8 oclock Thursday evening. County Agent W J Roudabush said the gathering will elect officers and complete final steps in county organization under the wheat acreage reduction plan. Farmers signing or wishing to sign an acreage contract are urged to attend. The reduction target was changed from 20 percent to 15 percent.
George Lease, about 75, died last night at the county home where he had lived since 1920. A Crawfordsville native, he spent his youth there and later lived in Washington. He once worked as a janitor at the Rock Island station and later at a local hotel. Funeral services will be held at the L. A. Jones funeral home at ten o'clock Wednesday morning, conducted by Dr. F. C. Witzigman.
Washington High School football faces a lean year as coach Guy Carlton builds a team from limited experience. Four of nine lettermen are unavailable including stars Kupka and Willis Jones, with Allen Hunsaker and Jack McFarland also missing time. Sixty players reported with 35 to 40 expected on the squad and 25 freshmen under Henry Little.
Fred Garrett living northwest of Brighton in the Sandy Hook community was arrested last night for intoxication and today sentenced to 30 days in the county jail by Justice of the Peace J. BE. Bovee.
Washington high school opened with 471 students, 24 fewer than last year’s 505. Seniors 116, juniors 117, sophomores 139, freshmen 99. Junior college reports opening enrollment of 58, expected to rise with late registrations. Superintendent Peet says the new year starts smoothly with all teachers on the job.
John Jackson Don Radda and Harold Sehneider of Washington left Sunday for Chicago to join the 123rd Infantry band at the World’s Fair. The group reports a daily parade and concert on fair grounds with 48 members based year round in Fairfield. The Washington Municipal Band members regret missing NRA parade last night and note Jackson as drum major. The band says they are enjoying royal treatment by the fair association.
Dr. D. C. Steelsmith of Des Moines is expected to begin work this afternoon as director of the Washington County health unit. He accepted after discussion with the county board, replacing Dr. H. L. Hendricks. The unit is assured for at least ten months, aided by Rockefeller funds and county support. Miss Hilkea Jacobs will continue as school nurse under Steelsmith.
Santa Monica readers hear that the NRA stands for no Republicans allowed as a joke but the speaker argues the recovery effort is national and nonpartisan. He cautions against turning it into partisan politics and notes it transcends Washington job allocations.
Des Moines attorney John D. Denison told Central Park listeners that America will succeed in the national recovery program. He praised the movement, likened its aims to Christianity, and urged equal rights for all, including the oppressed, women, and children, while blaming the old order for recent ills. The address followed the county NRA parade with a large crowd and public address system aid.
Washington delegation attended the Riverside St. Mary's Church Labor Day event where about 1500 people joined the program and over 600 were served. Congressman E F Kicher and Attorney A E Baldrige spoke. Dr K E Blythe welcomed. The Wellman high school band played. a home talent play and free film followed. Riverside defeated Lone Tree 6 to 3 in an afternoon baseball game.
More than 2000 Iowa coal miners in five counties walked out over NIRA code disputes. The strike began near Chariton with 500 miners, expanding to Monroe Boone and Marion counties. Williamson Lucas Polk Boone Monroe and Marion counties report mine closures as Frank Wilson tries to mediate. Wilson says the action aims to draw public attention to the coal situation and hopes for a quick end.
Two powerful hurricanes raked the U S Gulf and Atlantic coasts. The Texas storm caused at least one hundred deaths and isolated Brownsville Port Isabel and nearby towns with million dollar damages. The Florida cyclone hit the citrus belt after entering the gulf near Tampa.
Mrs. Charles Brown and daughter Mildred and Miss Una Ayers of New York City spent Sunday in Ottumwa visiting relatives.
Thousands lined the streets for a massive Labor Day procession in Washington County. The parade, touted as the county’s longest, showcased broad support for the NRA project with every local business represented and features from across the county underlining communal backing.
A large Wellman delegation arrived late due to a time misunderstanding. Though cars were decorated, the Wis county procession had dispersed by the time they reached the line, preventing a separate Wellman parade.
A massive parade through the county seat drew near 900 participants and hundreds of vehicles in a highly orderly, makeshift, four day setup. Brighton led with the sole band, while other towns sent limited musical groups, creating an astonishing civic procession that stretched for about 45 minutes.
Funeral services for Harve Y. Corpman will be held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at Grace Hill Moravian Church with Rev Cart W Klein of St Paul Evangelical Church officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill cemetery. Corpman, 74, born in Ohio, died yesterday morning from heart trouble on the family farm in this county after living there for 64 years. He is survived by an adopted son Herschel Corpman and was the youngest and last of his father John Corpman’s children.
