Bill Bruce Davis, 23, parked in an alley and was charged with possession of illegal whiskey vagrancy wife and child abandonment and illegal parking, raising questions about the cost of owning a car in the city.
Two petition groups opposed nudism at Evansdale Iowa council meeting. One petition with 391 signatures urged abatement of nudism seen as nuisance. the other with about 100 signatures defended the right to fence property for sunbathing. City Atty. Gallagher urged possible criminal action if affidavits and witnesses supported indecent exposure.
The Harnischfeger Corp will break ground next spring near Dubuque Iowa for an electrical equipment and hoist plant expected to employ 600 to 800. Partial operation by late 1958 with full completion in two to three years. The 300000 square foot facility will be on a 75 acre site by the Lake Peosia Channel to free Milwaukee works for cranes and shovels. Employees may relocate to Dubuque or shift to other company areas to ease the transition.

Blanche Ross 71, former Columbus Junction resident, died August 28 in a Chinon hospital France after a brief illness. Services set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Missouri with burial at Bethany. Born September 23, 1885, she married Frank Ross in 1903. widowed in 1936. Survived by son Claude Ross Columbus Junction, daughter Mrs Caughton, and two grandchildren. member of Christian church Eastern Star and Rebecca lodge.
A sealed federal indictment accuses 46 men of conspiring to import drugs from Europe. Harry Stromberg known as Nig Rosen led the syndicate and the probe led to nine arrests including two former customs agents. The operation allegedly moved 50 pounds of heroin with a street value over three million dollars across multiple states.

Marshalltown Iowa police officer Dale Williamson was suspended for a week after ticketing Bruno Anderson a garage owner who began to drive away before the ticket was finished. The City Civil Service Commission reinstated Williamson with full pay and ordered payment of hearing costs and attorney fees.
President and Mrs. Eisenhower landed at Quonset Point in overcast weather to start their delayed Rhode Island vacation. Governor Roberts led a naval welcome as Columbine III touched down and the couple moved to a cruiser for a 50 minute Narragansett Bay cruise to Newport amid calm but growing anticipation after two months of wait.
Two Parsons College graduates join Washington teaching staff for the year. Wanda Zuehlke will teach fourth and fifth grades at Lincoln School while Roberta M. Kinnaman becomes the elementary girls physical education instructor. Zuehlke has rural teaching experience in Jefferson and Wapello counties and in Kentucky and Wyman. Kinnaman, Fairfield resident, is listed in Who’s Who Among Students and has completed student teaching prior to starting.
The Washington County demonstration team returned from the Iowa State Fair with blue ribbons for their demonstration and record books. Karen Crawford and Barbara Glassburner of the Cedar Clippers 4-H club were chosen to present on WOI-TV. Their leader Mrs. Maurice Crawford and home economist Marilyn Schweitzer accompanied them.
Mrs. James Clegg 84 of the Ainsworth community died at 4 a.m. Wednesday September 4 1957 at Washington County Hospital after illness. Funeral services are set for Friday September 6 at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Brehmer officiating. Burial will be in Ainsworth cemetery. She was born April 30 1873 in Washington County daughter of A D and Esther Dun can Acheson and married James E Clegg February 5 1896 in Ainsworth where they lived all their lives. She belonged to County Line Club Happy Hour Club Womens Association of the U P Church and Ainsworth United Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband two grandsons Larry Clegg Fresno California and James Clegg Chicago Illinois two great grandchildren and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her son Harold in 1940.
A TU104 jet liner carrying 40 Soviet U N delegates landed at McGuire Air Force Base New Jersey after a Moscow to McGuire flight. The 15 hour 5 minute trip marked the first Russian passenger jet to reach the United States in 20 years with 60 passengers and a six man crew plus three British navigators.
Johnson contends the Lynnville Sully bond election in Jasper Mahaska and Poweshiek counties failed to meet 60 percent approval. The Jasper County District Court counted 769 460 ballots with spoiled ballots later deemed invalid while Bechly upheld a 749 443 result equating to 62 percent in favor.

Mayor W H Smart announced that parking within a block of a fire is banned except for official cars. Police will issue summons to violators as fire trucks respond with sirens. Fire crews report drivers repeatedly block fire scenes and crowd ambulances and bicycles in the street.
