Des Moines Sept 4 The Iowa state Democratic convention met with light attendance and split over platform language. The resolutions committee delivered two reports and rejected reaffirming the Kansas City platform, opting instead for a pledge to Democratic principles. The party endorses tariff changes, antitrust action, Philippine self government, opposition to imperialism and injunctions, and supports home rule for cities. Edward Eggleston author of the Hoosier Schoolmaster died Tuesday night at Lake George New York. Born December 10 1837 in Vevay Indiana he trained in local schools and a Virginia boys school and became a Methodist minister in 1857 later serving as pastor of the Church of Christian Endeavor in Brooklyn retiring from ministry in 1870 to devote himself to literature. His best known work remains The Hoosier Schoolmaster.

Roosevelt Narrowly Escapes After carriage Collision
President Roosevelt survived a near-fatal streetcar crash in Pittsfield as Secret Service Agent Craig was killed and Secretary Cortelyou and Governor Crane injured. The president and entourage were en route to Lenox when the trolley struck the carriage at a Union Street crossing.
