Bruce D. Gearin of Washington pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court to a breaking and entering charge for the June 3 break-in at Wayne's Oil & Tire Co. District Judge Arthur McGiverin set sentencing for Sept. 16. Gearin, 17, was transferred from juvenile to adult court at the county attorney's request. Hagist of Brighton pleaded innocent to first offense driving while intoxicated and waived speedy trial.

Lightning strikes tree outside Clarence Goodwin home
During a Thursday night electrical storm a bolt struck a tree in front of the Clarence Goodwin residence at 220 South Avenue D Washington. The strike left a long scar on the tree and splinters across the yard, with some damage to electrical appliances inside the home. Mrs. Goodwin said it was too close for comfort.

Moravia residents nabbed in forged check ring
Four Moravia residents including a 16 year old were arrested in Centerville on a forgery charge tied to about 800 dollars in forged checks from a joint account held by Lucille Taylor and Leo Burns. A fifth suspect has a warrant as deputies conclude an eight day probe.

Missing West Des Moines man shooter case car found
A 1973 Oldsmobile owned by Douglas M. Furth was found in a downtown Des Moines parking lot. Police said it contained no evidence about Furth's death. His body was found in the basement of his home after he was shot.

EPA to restrict pesticides to trained certified applicators

Union approves new ISU contract in Centerville
Centerville Iowa Local 735 of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers narrowly approved a new contract with Iowa Southern Utilities. The deal raises wages and benefits by 10.8 percent first year and 7.9 percent second year. Vote was 149 in favor to 111 against as the old two year pact expired. Local 735 represents about half of Iowa Southern's 525 employees and 33 of 50 ISU workers in the northeast district serving 98 communities in south central and southeast Iowa.

Des Moines Woman Reunited After Weeklong Kidnapping Ordeal
Evelyn VanTassel, 58, was released unharmed after more than a week held by escaped Michigan convict Douglas Wayne Henry who abducted her Aug. 25 from a cottage near Marquette. FBI captured Henry as he returned to his motel. Her husband Leo, a retired university official, and daughter Marilyn accompanied her at a courthouse interview as authorities said Henry faces a federal kidnapping charge and a $100,000 bond set for Sept. 9.
